Simpson opts against run for Cubin's House seat

State Rep. Colin Simpson of Cody announced Monday that he will not run for Congress in 2008.

Simpson had said last spring that he planned to run against Rep. Barbara Cubin next year for Wyoming's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Simpson said serving in Washington, D.C., did not fit with his current goals, requiring too much time away from his family.

Cubin announced earlier this month that she would not seek an eighth term in Congress, citing the need to spend time with her ailing husband.

Simpson's name was on a short list of 10 who were being considered in June by the Wyoming Republican Central Committee for appointment to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Craig Thomas.

Simpson said he would seek re-election next year to the Wyoming Legislature, where he is majority floor leader for the House of Representatives.

When asked if he was planning a bid for governor in 2010, Simpson said such a move was "possible."

Three Republicans have said they will run for Cubin's seat: retired naval officer Bill Winney, Cheyenne substitute teacher Swede Nelson and Casper social worker Kenn Gilchrist.

Democrat Gary Trauner, a Wilson businessman who lost by a narrow margin to Cubin last year, announced his campaign in October.

Former State Treasurer Cynthia Lummis and former Wyoming GOP chairman Tom Sansonetti have also said they were considering running. Both were finalists to replace Thomas.

Is he the son of that rino Alan? If so, I hope he stays in Wyoming.

So the RINO suddenly doesn’t have time to live in D.C. That’s a switch.

Hopefully, Cynthia Lummis will be announcing.

Sounds odd. I hope Lummis runs, otherwise all we have are 2nd and 3rd tier candidates. Of course, Trauner is 2nd tier, but he’s as close to first tier for the Dems as you can get in WY given how close he came to winning.
