Related to this or not, there is the notion that Stanton was involved in the Booth conspiracy in that he knews about it and let it happen. For that reason, Grant was warned/persuaded not to attend the play with Lincoln. If the guy assigned to kill Johnson had not got cold feet, and with Seward at death’s door, Stanton might have used the army to establish a dictatorship. Johnson’s survival made that impossible. BUT, just a “theory” and what does it matter now. Everyone is dead. Things happened as they happened.
