A suspected bias attack on four Jewish subway riders in New York City has resulted in a friendship between the Jewish victims and the Muslim college student who came to their aid.

Walter Adler is calling Hassan Askari a hero for intervening when Adler and three friends were assaulted on a subway train in lower Manhattan on Friday night.

The ringleader of the self-described Christians involved in this subway attack is an individual who was convicted of aggravated assault in a previous incident, and was waiting to serve a six-month custodial sentence before he got invovled in this little dustup. He's a thug.

The real question is why there was a "waiting" period before this convicted thug was locked up....

Isn't it amazing how they all got together to set this up?

Where were Adler's friends? 10 guys beat up Askari while Adler and friends who also engaged in the taunting escaped injury?

"That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids, that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23, who suffered a broken nose and a lip wound.

The real question is why there was a "waiting" period before this convicted thug was locked up....

The usual reason is that such individuals who have a good lawyer and parents willing to put up money for him can have him out on remand to "get his affairs in order" before he goes into the can.

Hence my sympathy for his parents - they have bent over backward to save him from himself and he keeps slapping them in the face.

I was doing a comparison of social acceptance between NYC and the deep south. If it came off as bigoted, then I was wrong to have said it.

I actually live on the eastern shore of Maryland. There are people this far north that still speak of black people as “colored.” I’ve been to NYC quite a bit and I don’t see the same sort of prejudices that exist in more rural areas of the country.

I spent some of my younger days in the south, and can vaguely recall restrooms for men, women, and colored.

Been on a couple visits recently, the South is way different now.

It's as if both sides finally said 'the Hell with it' and decided to try actually getting along for a change.
