Romney vs. Thompson

Another school of thought, including THE WEEKLY STANDARD's own Dean Barnett and Stephen F. Hayes, says Thompson won.

It makes you wonder: Let's say Mike Huckabee is experiencing a Dean-like bubble that will pop on caucus night. If the parallel works, Huckabee ends up, like Dean, placing third. Who would be in second in that case? Let's say Thompson comes in second, since he's running third at the moment. Then the GOP is set up for a Romney-Thompson fight. It could happen. Really.

Very plausible scenario! Howard Dean was an unknown small state governor backed by his party's fringe.

Dean was ok in Iowa considering he was coming home to friendly territory. It was the Dean scream that lost it IMO. Fred is after South Carolina and I can’t see him losing composure with 3rd place finishes in the first two.

Fred may not have charisma but he does have class.

"Very plausible scenario!"

I doubt it. He probably won't act like a raving lunatic on live television as Howard Dean did that night.

Romney won’t be acting like a raving lunatic, he will be doing his imitation of a programmed “setepford wife”.

The guy is very off-putting.

There is something distressingly robotic about Romney. If the voters loved “I Feel Your Pain” Clinton, I can’t see them responding to Romney at all. He can’t win the general election in this Touchy/Feely age.

Exactly so. And therefore he is the CHOICE of the MSM and DNC.

Scroll down at that link to Stephen F. Hayes' column. He says:

Mike Huckabee, by contrast, is wearing thin. His canned lines are stale and too glib. He talks like a self-help guru.

Bingo!

The article was talking about Huckabee pulling a Dean, not Fred.

And there is something distressingly corpse-like about Thompson.

He has something even more needed... he has Statesmanship... he is a true Statesman and Patriot... that is a slim commodity in the Republican candidates... only three seem to be proper Conservatives. Tank, Fred and Duncan... not necessarily in that order.

Fred is the grown-up in the group. He is well-reasoned, judicial and careful in his thoughts, attentive to details and consequences, but does not prevaricate or defer to his lawyers or handlers. I am one notch away from endorsing him - then he will surely take off.

If this is to be the case, then Thompson will get stronger and stronger as the campaign moves forward, especially when the campaign gets to the southern U.S.A.

The pundits have been writing Fred Thompson's political obituary for the past four months because he opted not to play the game in the way that they wanted him to. Fred Thompson marches to his own drum beat, as we saw in Wednesday's debate. That was further proof that he is a man with the courage to lead and to set the agenda, not just follow the "pied piper" like a bunch of rats.

Machiavelli, did you watch the debate? Thompson mopped the floor with every one of them including Romney. The old “He has no fire in the belly” BS won’t work as it was proven he does have it, so take that liberal/democratic talking point somewhere else.

The “Dean Scream” was after the IOWA primary loss. It was in his post-loss speech, he was trying to rally his faithful who were shocked by his loss.

I think Dean lost Iowa because the nutroots that supported him didn’t realise you couldn’t vote in a caucus by web-cam.

You can’t have a thread anymore on FR without it turning into a personal attack on Romney. Forget all the half-truths about his record, and simply rants about “not voting for a liberal”. Just look between post one and this one, and see the attacks on Romney, the person.
