Thompson Doesn't Fear Repercussions of Religious Endorsement (Conservative Methodists)
WLBT-TV Jackson, Mississippi ^ | December 14, 2007 | Jon Kalahar

Posted on 12/15/2007 12:09:31 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Republican presidential candidate, Fred Thompson made his second stop through the magnolia state in less than a month Friday. He picked up an endorsement for a conservative Methodist group, the Wesleyan Center for Strategic Studies.

Fred Thompson says he's the same person whether he's in the deep south or out west. His "tell it like it is" demeanor showed itself at the most recent GOP debate.

But it's that same resolve the Wesleyan Center founders say is the reason they chose to endorse him.

"He is just not Fred '08, he is Fred everyday," said Reverend Phillip Knight, Wesleyan Center for Strategic Studies.

The Wesleyan Center represents over 10 million Methodists nationwide. An endorsement Thompson says puts a wind at his back. One also that may not sit well with everyone.

But while an endorsement from a conservative religious group might put him is good standing with many Mississippians, what does it do for Thompson's image nationwide as he prepares for the caucuses early next year?

Thompson sees it this way.

"We're not mixing politics and religion. Politics does not mean you can't have the support of strong religious leaders, I think it's just the opposite," said Thompson.

Thompson told a group of about fifty supporters he plans to stay tough against terrorism, tighten the borders and control spending in Washington. Since not seeking re-election in 2002, Thompson appeared in the t-v show "Law and Order" for the last five years. But he says he felt the need to return to public service.

"I wasn't at my highest and best use reading somebody else's script and I hope America is better for it," said Thompson.

And you can bet he'll return to Mississippi sometime soon.

"We were just talking about the fact, I left a restaurant that did not have catfish. I did not see one catfish in the place and I was sorely disappointed, and the next time I come I'm going to rectify that mistake," said Thompson.

Most recent polls show Thompson running third as the Iowa primary nears in early January. The Mississippi primary for both republican and democratic candidates is March eleventh.

Anyone else notice all the big endorsements coming Fred's way lately? 10 million Methodists is nothing to sneeze at!

"He is just not Fred '08, he is Fred everyday". Indeed!

Something tells me that with all of these big endorsements for Fred, that the other top tier candidates media hype leading in the polls is a lot of hot air or a house built on sinking sand.

I want either Fred or Rudy as your next President. He is a solid guy and defendable in our strange political landscape in my country although Rudy is more so. But Fred is more my guy, although I have for some time been dreaming about a ticket with both of them. I must concede though in such a ticket I have sometimes believed Rudy should be in front with his executive experience.

But seeing Fred use his wittiness on Hillary will be beutiful, making even my nation maybe see how far out she is, not the favorite and best as the media portrays her (and actually Obama also).

Agreed. I think Fred has a broad-base of natural support without media hype which is why he is in 3rd while doing “nothing”. I’d prefer an Iowa surprise finish, but slow and steady wins the race, usually.

Go Fred!

Or both?

I love your Home Page, Leifur!

Your right, that would be one tough ticket! Sadly it is not to be. Maybe Americans want a soft President, who does nothing, so we can relax a while? Who knows.

We shall see.

“”We’re not mixing politics and religion. Politics does not mean you can’t have the support of strong religious leaders, I think it’s just the opposite,” said Thompson.”

Most irritating that Thompson feels the need to even make that statement. Two putative reverends can run for the Democrat Presidential nomination and no one says anything about mixing religion and politics. The Democrats can conduct political rallies and collect contributions in black churches and no one mentions anything about a “wall”. The double standard for Republicans and Democrats continues, and is, as always, appalling.

Fred doesn't blather on and on about religion the way someone like the fool Huckabee does, and yet many religious voters who seem to get that they're voting for president, not for Guy Who Talks Most About Religion seem to get him.

These people can take care of their own selves, thank you very much, and don't need a president who's going to be a religious leader, too.

Quite a few, as I understand it. Original Wesleyan Methodism is not the socialism being peddled by the UMC. In addition to the United Methodist Church, there are over 40 other denominations that descend from John Wesley’s Methodist movement. Some, such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Free Methodists, the Wesleyan Church (formerly Wesleyan Methodist), the Congregational Methodist Church and First Congregational Methodist Church are explicitly Methodist. The Primitive Methodist Church is a continuing branch of the former British Primitive Methodist Church. Others do not call themselves Methodist, but are related to varying degrees. The Evangelical Church was formed by a group of EUB congregations who dissented from the merger which formed the United Methodist Church. The Salvation Army was founded by William Booth, a former Methodist, and derives some of its theology from Methodism. Similar “social justice” denominations include the Church of the Nazarene and the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Some of the charismatic or pentecostal churches such as the Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Assemblies of God also have roots in or draw from Wesleyan thought.

The National Church itself is liberal... I am a Methodist and individual Churches in the South are ALL Conservative. I am just to the right of Attila The Hun myself.

If you’re part of the United Methodist Church, do you know where your money is going?

I give NO MONEY to the UMC... because I know what that putrid organization is and does. I give money where I know the LORD will make the best use of it. I am informed more than you know.

Good. I can’t get over the number of conseratives who blindly give to the liberal (NCC) churches. Either they don’t know or don’t care. But they’re contributing to the spread of liberalism.
