What you excerpted AND your headline made it sound like Snopes was agreeing that there was a major MSM conspiracy to keep this out of the news. In fact, Snopes says the opposite. Snopes confirmed the basic events, but went on to point out that the allegation there was a conspiracy is utterly ridiculous.
Indeed it does, if for no other reason than it raises the self-defense awareness of those who may be in a bit of denial about the threats we face daily in this "multicultural tapestry."
The Washington Times did a story about this about a month ago - they said the stories of mutilation are not true and there have been over 45 stories in the local papers about it.
The defense attorney says the false stories are prejudicing the jury pool while the prosecutor (an assistant U.S. attorney) said he would have no public comments but would file a brief in court.
The gang leader is being tried separately because there is a alleged second hand admission from him and because he was not present at the crime. The judge ruled the local publicity does not mean the trial needs to be moved. Both trials are set for summer 2008.
BTW, that was a long winded way to say that is this case Snopes is not correct. There was a murder but not as described. And without the mutilation its not enough different form the other thousands of brutal murders and rapes that happen each year to stand out.

I was born n'raised in the north woods with my grandparents - grampa a Maine Guide - where there were more bear and moose than people.
Then later, after graduating, left the state and lived all over the nation. Took me a quarter century to get smart and move back to the woods - with the better neighbors.

The issue here is what the media would have done if the rapists and murderers had been white, and the victims black. Given the top tier, and often over-the-top, coverage the media gave the Duke rape case (where no one was even killed), it’s safe to assume that had the races been reversed in Knoxville, the media would have seared the event into our national consciousness with massive coverage that would be continuing to this day, nearly a year after the event.

When I was in Los Angeles during 1995-2005, the couple that run Snopes.com
were on radio occassionaly (IIRC, “The Mr. KABC Show” on KABC 790AM).
Although I may have not always agreed with their personal viewpoint on
some topics, I did feel they were fairly even-handed and (when available),
they followed the evidence on events whereever it might lead.
BTW there has been trouble with some of the bloggers on the left trying to discredit this or lessen the Crime that was committed.
The MSM is finally starting, ever so modestly, to report on Tennessee’s Knoxville Horror.Last month, Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner announced that the four defendants charged with having kidnapped, robbed, gang-raped, murdered, desecrated the corpses of, and stolen from Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, will each have a separate trial, each of which Judge Baumgartner foresees – perhaps a tad optimistically – as lasting two weeks.
