RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia high school student said she was asked by a teacher to cover up a lesbian-themed shirt or face suspension.
Bethany Laccone, 17, said she was asked to cloak a logo of two interlocked female symbols while attending a class this month at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth. She's a full-time senior at nearby Woodrow Wilson High School, where she has not faced a similar ultimatum.
In a letter sent Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia asked Norcom administrators to remove any mention of the incident from Laccone's records and agree not to similarly censor other students.
The school's dress code prohibits "bawdy, salacious or sexually suggestive messages." ACLU leaders want administrators to clarify that students can express political views.
The ACLU gave the school until Jan. 11 to respond or face further action.
"What's happening to Bethany Laccone is a clear-cut case of unconstitutional censorship," said Kent Willis, executive director of the Virginia chapter.
School officials did not respond to repeated messages left by The Associated Press.

School is wrong! THIS school may be right on THIS occasion. But school is wrong.

The ACLU is a disgrace to America and its Consitution. It is nothing but a communist front group who wishes to see this nation destroyed.
If any student tried this in the elementary school I went to the Nuns would have tore them up. What crap.
I don’t believe that anyone should fight the degradation, propaganda, salaciousness, etc., of government schools. Those who “get it” have already removed their children. As more people “get it” they will remove their children. There are people who will never “get it,” and will never remove their children from Mind-Control Middle School and Lord of the Flies High School until they are shut down. I say, let the schools get worse as fast as they please. More people will then “get it” sooner. Schools need to be destroyed, and no one can destroy them faster than those who are running them. Don’t slow up the process!
Wanna bet her parents bought it and drove her to school with her wearing it. Come on, it’s in the dress code so they/she planned this controversy from the start.
I agree with the ACLU on this. At least if I’m thinking correctly of what the shirt looked like. I’m imagining two female restroom symbols holding hands seems like political speech to me. And we all know students don’t shed their 1st amendment rights t the schoolhouse gate.
Better check post 19 first, big guy.
