Doesn’t matter; all water under the bridge.

IIRC, our betters granted him a full pardon for anything and everything, known & unknown, so he could ‘effectively lead his people on the road to peace’.

Didn’t his uncle set up the Muslim Brotherhood? Collaborate with Hitler? Teach “Yassir” everything he knew, so he could ‘inherit’ the leadership?

Arafat is dead. I believe that's the case with George Habash.

Those are the only two Palestinian terrorists I've ever seen or met in the Washington DC area.

Before they were really famous the State Department used to invite them over for meetings of various kinds, then they ended up killing too many people to make that sort of thing comfortable anymore so they quit making the visits.

They both "worked for the man" and he was in Moscow. If "the man" had found out about those early visits to Washington I'm pretty sure they'd found their funds cut off and someone else brought in to replace them.

Sometimes this is one doggone stange place.

...the sages of Stockholm.

THAT atrocity is given given out by the numnuts of Oslo.

Can't really blame the Swedes for debasing it.

I would like to see someone ask the anointed of FR (Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson) what they will do about the State Department and the intelligence agency’s of this nation should they be elected. It may help me make up my mind about who to support.

We might as well withdraw $500 million from the treasury and burn it to stay warm.

She ceased to be disappointing back when she dropped the hard line on NK, and then continued the policy of throwing good money after bad in the ME.

She went from appearing to be doing Bush's bidding, to taking great pride and joy in continuing disastrous policies.

Didn’t Algore win the same award as Yassar Arafat?

It was (very) common knowledge when I worked in government 30 years ago.

I thought that this was already well known to all. My bad.

I musta missed something.

We knew Arabfat’s Black September organization was responsible back when it happened!

As for the “peace” prize, it lost its significance even before they gave Arabfat one.

Just how far up their asses are their heads.

Not only where the sun don't shine, up where it's never been heard of.

but I'm amazed that the Mossad never had the will, or ability, or timing to send him to Hell

They certainly had the ability and likely, the will. It was "political considerations" on the part of Israel's democratically elected government that retrained them.

Why call it “years of hope”? That’s an oxymoron and sounds like they would make him out to be a hero. I can’t tell from reading the article if it will be available to get on Amazon or whereever or if it is a book in the Arabic language. Of course, I’d want to read some reviews to see what the book would be about and would not pay a cent if it glorified this guy which it probably does.

And the “man” was Yuri Andropov. But I’m not sure which visits you are referring to. Earlier than the ones to the UN in the early 1970s and to Carter a few years later? My understanding was that Arafat was completely controlled by the KGB even as a snot-nose in the 1960s. I’m not disputing you, but I’d be amazed to learn that Arafat “stepped out” on the KGB—seems more likely (to me) some sort of play-act engineered by Andropov—??

First time I ran into Arafat was at the old Drug Fair coffee shop cafeteria at Arlington Towers. I'd run into George Habash earlier ~ guy traveled with a small entourage of machinegun toting tough guys.

But I met Arafat more than once. Actually sat at the same table with him and talked through interpreters. He and I had some friends in common (who lived in the Rosslyn area). Not exactly sure who he was working for during the tailend of the Nixon years, but it got him to DC from time to time.

The CIA ran some schools in the office buildings there in those days and I knew some instructors ~ mostly third-world exile types, and some Palestinians, Tunisions, etc.

You really wouldn't think that was a place devoted mostly to education and international intrigue.

A pizza joint up the road, I think it was called Tony's Pizza at the time, or maybe Joe's Pizza, on Wilson boulevard was the only one in the DC area that carried guaranteed to be HALAL pizza, so it was probably the big draw for these guys. At the Drug Fair, the draw was the coffee. When the big guys came in, first thing that happened was they took over the coffee urn and drained it. Put in their own stuff.

I must say Arab terrorists back in the early 70s definitely had good taste in coffee blends.

The difficulty the Mossad always faced with the idea of eliminating Arafat was that you'd end up with something like Hamas or Hezbollah to deal with, and those guys are all crazy. At least Arafat behaved and thought like a normal human being, and was far more experience with North African civilization.

Besides, with the KGB in the loop and Mossad having its guys in the KGB, Mossad had the upperhand in the game.

Oh, yeah, and Arafat had great rapport with these stringers who worked for ABC ~ bunch of Palestinians had came here as refugees, got educations and good jobs, and were able to provide good coverage to Arafat and his friends ~ not sure Mossad wanted to take on ABC at the time. Someone may know, but I got the feeling this ABC/Arafat deal was of great financial benefit to a lot of folks on all sides of all the questions in that region.

One of the times I ended up at the table with Arafat in Rosslyn one of the ABC guys suggested we all keep our hands ABOVE the table this time ~ my thought was that somebody around here may be "gay" ~ and I guess I was right ~ none of 'em wanted to play handsies with Yassr.

“The latest edition of the Egyptian magazine Al-Ahram Al-Arabi has confirmed what many in the West have suspected for a long time: that Yasser Arafat personally directed the Black September terrorist organization that claimed responsibility for the 1971 murder of Jordanian Prime Minister Wasfi at-Tal, the 1972 massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, and other atrocities.”

Well, hell, let’s dig him up and give his rotting corpse another Nobel Prize. It certainly couldn’t damage their credibility any further.
