Republican Mitt Romney said Wednesday that if elected president he and his wife will not embarrass the nation by their conduct in the White House as happened in "the Clinton years."
In an interview on CNN, Romney was asked about comments he made at recent house parties in Iowa that he and his wife, Ann, would not embarrass the nation in the White House. He is campaigning for Thursday's Republican presidential caucuses in Iowa, while Hillary Rodham Clinton is campaigning on the Democratic side.
"We'll try and represent ourselves and our nation well also to our kids because I think, I think kids watch the White House and there have been failures in the past in the White House - if you go back to the Clinton years and recognize that - that I think had an enormous impact on the culture of our country," Romney said. "And we'll do our very best, our whole family will to - well, if we can't be perfect, we'll do our best to uphold and to be a good example for the kinds of values I think people expect from our leaders."
Romney also said that in his comments he was "not referring to anybody, referring to ourselves. We will do our very best to uphold the kind of values that people expect of a White House couple."
The last part of Bill Clinton's second presidential term was dominated by a scandal involving his relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
The Romneys have been married 38 years and have five sons and 11 grandchildren. The former Massachusetts governor has featured his wholesome-looking family prominently in his presidential campaign.
Huck and McCain for being libs
Time/Putin
Clintons time and again
the MSM...
FYI
Good, I am glad that this shows that Romney will not be afraid to bring up what he needs to. I can’t see McCain or Guliani saying something like that, Guliani because of his own record and McCain because he has had to work closely with Hillary in the Senate.
Good one, Romney!
Rudy is the only other candidate hitting hard at the Dems... McCain wants to have a “kindler, gentler” atmosphere... Bush tried that, look where that got him...
Why isn’t FDT doing that? Huckabee?
He never supported that, loser. Get your facts straight.
I think it is a mistake for Fred or Mitt supporters to go out of their way to demonize the other. I think they are the only two decent candidates. I personally like Mitt better though. Rudy and McCain are unacceptable and it would be a loss for the Republcian Party.
Calling me a 'loser' is a personal attack. I'm sorry that you feel this is such a sensitive topic, but it's my biggest objection to a Romney presidency - he caved on a fundamental institution. He let a court dictate law in his state. You don't like my opinion, disagree with it, but don't take it personal.
You are right that Rudy did hit hard at Hillary in one incident. I just don’t think he has it in him to hit her where it really hurts, he has too many skeletons in his own closet and it would be too easy for her to hit him back.
Bravo! We have the same priorities, and Romney does, on occasion, make accurate and blunt points. I loved what he had to say to the media at one of his gubernatorial news conferences in Boston a few years ago-he took “it” to them then, and needs to do more of it.
Again IMHO the rest all have faults and some are big faults with some of the candidates. So is Mitt the best of the rest? I guess time will tell.
Ron Paul lives in another world and is totally out to lunch. Huckabee has no clue on foreign policy. McQueeg has stab the President in the back on many occasions. He has supported McQueeg/Feingold and the McQueeg/Kennedy bills.
Rudy is a at least honest and you know where he is coming from. But he is liberal on so many issues. Mitt has come around to saying the right things but is he totally honest about it?
That is why Fred is the easy choice for me. After that I’m not really sure.
If the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan support the GOP candidate, whoever he is, then I will vote for that candidate. It is as simple as that. I will not let the Dems win and lead our troops. Handing over our troops to the Dems is like handing them over to Al Qaeda. Voting for a GOP candidate I detest is a small sacrifice compared to what the troops sacrifice.
Let's hope at the top of his "needs to" list is chinagate.
I think that the country is trending Pub.Some small signs. If Hill is the nominee ,I expect that the Pubs will use her arrogant dismissal of Gen.Petreaus’testimony to sink her.And it will along with the immigration issue which I believe the Dems seriously misjudged.
Yes, he got his "to go" and has returned to whatever planet he came from.
FOX NEWS SUCKS
JUST ANOTHER DRIVE BY LIBERAL MEDIA OUTLET
I used to think FOX channel reported the truth and was unbiased. Wrong ..they are just as bad as CNN, C-Span, NBC, etc.
The spin and lack of any coverage to some candidates proves the point. FOX has their agenda and it's not conservative. I don't trust them anymore, so I have to look to the internet for the truth. I know there are many people that feel the same way, Fred Thompson supporters, Duncan Hunter supporters, and Ron Paul supporters to name a few.
At least you can get all sides of an issue on the internet. Thank God for the internet.
