With Thompson dropping out of the presidential race, his conservative supporters are wondering who to support now. He has not yet endorsed one of the remaining candidates. There are four viable Republican candidates left; Huckabee, Romney, McCain and Giuliani. Giuliani is unacceptable to the kind of conservative who was supporting Thompson, because of his liberal social views and reputation as a moderate. He has yet to win a primary and may drop out of the race if he doesnt win Florida. McCain and Romney are currently tied for the lead in Florida polls.
McCain is leading national polls, but Huckabee and Romney have more delegates than he does so far, which is what will ultimately determine the primary outcome. Huckabee is expected to do well on Super Tuesday, February 5, when 21 states, including quite a few southern states, will be holding their primaries. Many of those primaries are closed, so Independents wont be able to vote in the Republican primary, which had helped McCain.
Although not quite as liberal as Giuliani, Huckabee, Romney and McCain have problems with their records which have made conservatives hesitant to support them. Rush Limbaugh said yesterday this may be the first election he doesnt support a Republican.
Huckabees record on fiscal issues is troubling. However, his record on social issues is outstanding and he is to be admired for not hiding the fact hes a Christian. Compare this with John McCain, who not only has a poor record on fiscal issues such as tax cuts, but also has a poor record on social issues, receiving only a 65 rating in the most recent rating from the American Conservative Union, lower than even Nebraskas Senator Chuck Hagel who received a 75. He's also referred to conservative Christian leaders who didn't support him as "agents of intolerance," comparing them to Louis Farrakhan. National talk radio hosts like Limbaugh and Sean Hannity cant stand McCain, and columnist George Will recently said hes no maverick, hes really just a Democrat. McCain received a 75 rating from National Right to Life, and Brent Bozell reported yesterday that McCain aides whispered to reporters that he wasnt really that opposed to abortion and would come around on gay rights. McCain is disliked by the Republican party base and conservatives in Arizona, who consistently rate him as the most unacceptable candidate for president. Last year the chairman of the Maricopa County GOP wore a sticker that said McCain 2008 crossed out.
Romney claims to be a conservative now that hes running for president, and to his credit, did make some changes his last year or so in office, such as signing a bill banning partial-birth abortion. However, supporting Romney is a big gamble, since the pattern is that most candidates tend to run conservative then become more liberal after they enter office.
Yesterday Duncan Hunter endorsed Huckabee. Hunter was one of the most solid conservatives in the race, so this endorsement should not be taken lightly. Even libertarian Neil Boortz appears to be supporting Huckabee, because of his Fair Tax plan which would eliminate the IRS. At this point, Huckabee is looking like the best remaining viable candidate for conservatives to support.

LOL
Go FRed...
:)
Romney by process of elimination.
Maybe Bob Dole can be talked into another run. He lost by only 7% to Bill Clinton, and Hillary is less well-liked by the average voter than her HINO.
YEP. Time for the "republican" party to get busted. Perhaps even disbanded. They are now 100% RINO with the dems being 100% CCID (Communist Calling Itself Democrat).
I was done with the "republicans" when Fred showed up. The MSM and the "republican voters" ran him off so I am even more done with them now. The MSM showed their true selves in that they believe it is their prerogative create events instead of just report the news. And the voters? They could not pick the one good apple from the barrel of rotten ones at noon on a sunny day.
The result will be...
this nation WILL have 30 million brand new AAs (amnestied Americans) to start, with twice that many right behind them
this nation WILL become a "New America" and will bring about "sensible gun control" and began disarming it's own population.
this nation WILL take a sharp turn to communism.
this nation WILL slip from leader of the "free" world. With RINO's and CCID's running their self-gratifying rat circus in DC there will be no stopping it.
Fred Thompson was the last grownup in the room.
Where do Fred Thompson supporters go from here?I hope to fight it out on the convention floor.
Since it’s a choice between 4 Liberal-lites, it’s a matter of who stinks the least. They ALL stink, for various reasons.
McCain has pissed me off so many times, he actually might be enough to force me to stay home, something I’ve NEVER even comtemplated before.
Hucakboob would be the republican version of Jimmah Cahtuh and as far as I can see, he shouldn’t hold office any higher than his current level. He’s already maxed out as far as intellect and ability. No thanks.
Giuliani might be good on the WOT, but why elect a social liberal? Might as well have Shitlery.
That leaves Mitt. I wish I trusted him more. I don’t. I guess at this point for me, he maybe stinks the least although nobody should be celebrating because that certainly isn’t sayin’ much.
And as far as selecting conservative SCOTUS justices, I think we can all expect to be shafted by any of the above on that score.
We are so screwed.
A ‘real’ FredHead will do what Fred was trying to do; the BEST for this country. Staying home in a snit because the remaining candidates are not as good as Fred won’t do that. Do you think Fred will refuse to vote in the election because he doesn’t necessarily agree with the views of the Republican nominee? I don’t believe he will, because he knows what the outcome will be; something even worse for this country than a RINO.
Republican voters let the media tell them what to do this year. Very sad.
I would sadly have to agree.
Y’all can decide, and I hope whoever you pick beats Hillary. But I’m not helping with my effort, money, or vote. I just couldn’t face myself.
If my swing state goes for Hillary by one vote, and is the difference in the election, I’ll apologize later.
If that angers anyone, I really don’t care. Stop giving me only RINOs to choose from.
or at least taking a really long nap.
That’s basically my view ... but I have a tad more hope (with Mitt) as to SCOTUS & other federal judges because he has such worthies as Bork and Doug Kmiec supporting him. COULD Mitt disappoint? Sure.
But as I’m sure you’ll agree: HillObama is SURE to appoint 2-3 more young Brennans, Marshalls and Douglases, who’ll sit and legislate for 30-50 years. I can’t take the chance of that by “staying at home.” I’d vote for even McCain or Huckabee before taking that chance.
As for myself, where do I go after Fred? Ron Paul. Yes, many of you think hes a loon but he stands for all the underlying principles that made this country great. His Big Sin is his opposition to the War in Iraq.
However, we all KNOW that we must choose from among the leftovers or we will “waste” our vote. And if we don’t vote for one bad choice who will betray us we might get another bad choice who will betray us.
It’s too bad real conservatives in the country lack the proper organization and guts to pull off a real political uprising of substance by continuing to vote conservative. But we obviously don’t.
So lovely for you to tell us all what we think. It’s always amusing when an anonymous person on a message board thinks they’re Miss Cleo’s understudy with a God complex by not only diagnosing the motives of other anonymous people (especially since, only having been here a few months you can’t possibly know us all that well) and then judge those motives as if you were the second coming.
Things go Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Cindie
I agree with you, he is the most conservative of what’s left. I don’t like his stand on the war, but that’s not as important to me as illegal immigration or killing of babies...
I don’t think he can get elected, but I don’t think any of the rest can either.
“2. They are not a REAL conservative themselves”
That’s right, if we don’t come up with a real conservative the base can rally around, this thing is over.
