MADRID (Reuters) - Islamist extremists were planning attacks across Europe, especially against public transport, before their arrests in Barcelona last weekend, a Spanish paper reported on Saturday, citing a would-be attacker's testimony.

The Al Qaeda-inspired cell planned to attack the Barcelona metro and other targets in Spain, Germany, France, Portugal and the United Kingdom, said the bomber turned police informant.

In testimony that led to the arrest of 14 South Asians last Saturday, the informant told police the group had a preference for attacks on public transport, especially metro systems, El Pais newspaper reported.

"If we attack the metro, the emergency services can't get there," the informant said he was told by a fellow suicide bomber, El Pais reported.

And Spain rolled over and played dead, pulling out of Iraq and electing a leftist after the Madrid train bombings, so they can’t say it isn’t because they tried to accomodate the demands.
If true, this plot proves that Islamicists accept nothing short that burqas and bombed out buildings.

I had a scary personal experience in the Paris Metro in late 2005. I was going back to my hotel around 10:30 pm and the metro was virtually deserted. Two Muslims got on one wearing a backpack and though there were an abundance of empty seats they stood in a corner carefully watching the passengers. I quickly exited at the next stop and took another train. This was about 6 months after the London subway bombings and about two months after the Paris riots. I fully expected to read about a Metro bombing in the newspaper the next morning.
