I figured Ike did it to protect the Army, but he obviously should have supported McCarthy wholeheartedly instead.

One of my questions is why Eisenhower would also take action against McCarthy, which he did. Because there was more to it than just the truth of what McCarthy was saying. There was also the manner in which he was saying it. In politics, the messenger and his demeanor are at least as important as the message itself.
