2 New Endorsements Give McCain More Conservative Backers (yippeee)
Fox News ^ | 2/11/08 | staff

Republican front-runner John McCain received two endorsements Monday — one from GOP stalwart Gary Bauer and the other from a conservative group of Capitol Hill lawmakers — indicating growing strength for the candidate among a much needed but reluctant group of voters: conservative Republicans.

McCain has been strafed daily by conservative voices like radio host Rush Limbaugh and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, and he suffered losses this weekend in two out of three states holding nomination contests in the first one-on-one match-up against rival Mike Huckabee.

But McCain has taken a large lead in the battle for convention delegates, making it almost statistically impossible for Huckabee to take the nomination from McCain.

Still, any help McCain can get from the conservative base of his party — who believe strongly in smaller government, abolishing abortion, preventing gay marriage, gun rights and going on the attack against Islamic terrorism — is gladly accepted by a man who received a mixed reception from an audience of conservative Republicans last week.

Bauer, in a statement released by McCain’s campaign, focused on McCain’s military record and his fight against abortion.

“John McCain has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn,” said Bauer, a former presidential candidate and head of American Values. “I admire his consistent 24-year pro-life record and demonstrated commitment to the values that keep our families and communities strong.

“John McCain alone has the experience, character and credibility to lead as commander in chief on day one and defeat the transcendent threat of our time — radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to support John McCain for president,” he said.

Gary Bauer...I wondered if he was still alive. TheMcCainiacs are really digging up the moldy oldies in the Moral Majority now. I guess McKennedy doesn’t mind the evil, intolerant theocrats after all.

Conversely, I saw an endorsement of Obama by a Republican.

Yes, a Republican has declared support for Obama. The "Republican" who is supporting Obama is the trust-fund, blue blood grand daughter of Eisenhower. Fox News was stupid enough to put this putz on the air.

Can’t change a man’s multi-year liberal record with a few hollow endorsements. To mix metaphors, that dog won’t hunt ‘cause that leopard can’t change its stripes.

In order for conservatives to wield any power whatsoever, they must not be taken for granted. There must be a line beyond which we are unwilling to be pushed. If McCain is not beyond that line then I am apparently not a conservative...

McCain took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and then authored legislation specifically denied by it. I feel he should be hung for treason yet I am pressured to vote for him because he has an R behind his name. Sorry, can’t do it. I will take a longer view...

I am a strict-constructionist, the lack of my vote will be made up for by many liberals who will cross over. Now that our representatives are allowed to collectively ignore the limitations of the Constitution our grand experiment is doomed to failure. The next step, as Thomas Jefferson referred to, involves the blood of tyrants.

I never even heard of her, but for some reason, she is being paraded as an example of a "Republican" who supports Obama.

It is too laughable to be valid.

Interesting that McCain, the stalwart senator, has fewer congressional endorsements than Hillary or Obama. He had fewer than Romney before he dropped out.

McCain is 72 years old, whatever future he has is in the moment, the people endorsing him have a lot more future ahead of them. I STILL CANNOT let the fact drop that some sitting Republican Senator named Brownback who even fancied himself presidential timbre, and has pretended to a be a leader in the Republican Party from time to time, endorsed the presumptive candidate in his home state and could only get 25 per cent to fall in line. Where does he go from McCain?

Bauer - isn't he the one who was flipping pancakes and fell off the stage in a primary ?

Anyways, who cares what he thinks. The pundit that does drive me nuts is Bill Kristol and his condescending tone.

Interesting stratagy. Do you really think splitting the far right is the best way to beat McCain? Looks like you would be calling for one of them to drop out so that one of them could get the delagates needed to beat McCain.

Remind me not to ask you to be my campaign manager when I run for President. ;-)
