"The main problem is that there is no money allocated to manage reindeer feed catastrophes. We have to first survey the extent of the problem and then make an application for disaster aid. This takes time and in the meantime reindeer die and herders become frustrated," explains Ragnhild Svonni at the parliament.

Bureaucrats are bureaucrats, no matter where you find them. The real disaster is putting your trust them and your future in their hands.

I bet all is well with Ragnhild while the survey is conducted, though.

It's not a casual task. Reindeer NEED moss and lichen in their diet to avoid getting sick. That's why you find their North American brothers and sisters (the slightly larger caribou) in such terrible places ~

When a modest number of reindeer were brought to Alaska from Scandinavia back in the early part of the 20th Century, their food had to be collected and brought with them. Unfortunately there wasn't enough food so the herd had to be moved overland through territory where no one even knew if there would be moss for them.

Turned out there was moss ~ but not enough to be healthy, but soon enough the reindeer found lichens and all was well (even though the herds never grew in number the way the planners expected).

I would imagine the bureaucrats are doing a survey of lichens and moss suitible for reindeer. With a drought in the South and heavier than normal snow cover in the North ............
