Small Vendors Feel Pinch of Clinton’s Money Troubles
By MICHAEL LUO
Published: February 23, 2008

Peter Semetis, owner of Sale & Pepe Fine Foods in Lower Manhattan, was just paid for an event he catered in mid-December. Todd Heisler/The New York Times

It was just $2,492.63, a pittance, really, alongside million-dollar television buys and direct mail drops.

But with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination enduring a rough patch, Peter Semetis, the owner of a deli and catering business in Lower Manhattan, had been following the news and growing increasingly worried that he was not going to be paid for the assorted breakfast trays, coffee, tea and orange juice he had provided the campaign for an event in mid-December.

“I’m afraid of her dropping out of the campaign and me becoming a casualty,” Mr. Semetis said.

So on Thursday, he went to small claims court and filed suit. Mr. Semetis, 53, said he was hardly a political pundit but like others across the country, he had become caught up in the election in the last year and was able to offer some analysis. “There is potential for her to lose Texas,” he said — an assessment not at odds with the polls — “which would pretty much force her to quit.”

Mr. Semetis catered a Clinton event, a rally she did not attend, at the offices of District Council 37, the public employees’ union, on Dec. 15, charging the campaign $2,300, plus $192.63 in tax. Officials promised him that his business, Sale & Pepe Fine Foods, would be paid by check or credit card in a couple of weeks. After a few weeks passed, he started calling to see about the holdup.

Fascinating! The NY Times actually publishes a story with a named source?!

Could this be a new trend?!

The business owner in question is supposedly a Republican who doesn’t like McCain “because he is too much like Bush.” So he trusts the Clintons? What is it with New Yorkers?

No new trend. They require a named source ONLY for Dems. When running a hit-piece on a Republican, you only need an unnamed source to say someone they know, who will remain anonymous, heard it from someone else, who overheard a drunk guy in a bar say he read it on a blog somewhere.

I love how the Times couldn’t resist putting in that the business owner is a Republican that supports Hillary; they get to dog on Obama, Bush and McCain, plus satisfy their liberal readers that this is just a Republican dirty trick.

[After. . . The New York Times contacted the Clinton campaign on Friday, Howard Wolfson . . .said a check to pay Mr. Semetis had been put through the day before, and he furnished a copy of the check, dated Feb. 21, as proof.]

No surprise Wolfson and Clinton’s other longtime associates are looting campaign coffers for millions. From a previous Times story:

“Mark Penn, Mrs. Clinton’s chief strategist and pollster, and his team collected $3.8 million for fees and expenses in January; in total, including what the campaign still owes, the firm has billed more than $10 million for consulting, direct mail and other services, an amount other Democratic strategists who are not affiliated with either campaign called stunning.”

“Howard Wolfson, the communications director and a senior member of the advertising team, earned nearly $267,000 in January. His total, including the campaign’s debt to him, tops $730,000.”

“The advertising firm owned by Mandy Grunwald, the longtime media strategist for both Mrs. Clinton and Bill Clinton, the former president, has collected $2.3 million in fees and expenses, and is still owed another $240,000.”

Snicker. Named sources and fact checking only apply when attacking Democrats.
