UK: Christian couple told: 'You can't foster if you think it's wrong to be gay'

Christian couple told: 'You can't foster if you think it's wrong to be gay'

Eunice Johns

Eunice Johns: 'I can give love and security'

They are devoted foster parents with an unblemished record of caring for almost 20 vulnerable children.

But Eunice and Owen Johns have been forced to abandon their good work because they refuse to tell children as young as ten that homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle.

To do so, they say, would go against their Christian beliefs.

The devastated couple withdrew an application to their council to continue as foster carers after being told they must condone homosexuality to adhere to gay rights laws.

The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation), which came into force last April, makes it illegal for any business or organisation providing a public service to discriminate against anyone because of their sexuality.

The council says its fostering panel felt it would not be following the regulations if it placed a child with a couple who could not comply with the Act.

The couple's case comes at a time when there is a chronic shortage of foster parents, who work on a voluntary basis. Around 8,000 more are needed nationally.

The couple, who have four grownup children of their own, first became foster parents in 1996 and provided weekend respite care for 18 children over the next four years at their home in Derby. They gave up fostering when a catering business they ran became too time-consuming.

They then re-applied to provide weekend respite foster care to children aged under ten when they felt they were able to devote themselves fully to the task again.

Yesterday Mrs Johns, 59, a Sunday school teacher, said: "We started going through the assessment and were told that there was new legislation.

"They were asking: "What would you do if a 10 year-old child came home and said they had been picked on because they were homosexual?"

"They said, "Do you know you would have to tell them that it's ok to be homosexual?"

"But I said I couldn't do that because my Christian beliefs won't let me. Morally I couldn't do that, spiritually I couldn'tdo that.

"I said I was there to explain that I would not compromise my faith.

"I said I would have to tell the child that as I am a Christian I don't believe in homosexuality but I can give as much love and security as I possibly can."

Mr Johns, 63, a metal polisher, said: "I would love any child, black or white, gay or straight.

'But I cannot understand why sexuality is an issue when we are talking about boys and girls under the age of ten."

Their case has been taken up by the Christian Legal Centre, which is to seek a judicial review if the council does not reverse its decision.

Religious campaigners say Mr and Mrs Johns are the victims of an equality drive which puts gay rights above religious beliefs.

Stephen Green, director of Christian Voice said: "The fostering service is in danger of losing an experienced Christian couple all for the sake of worshipping at the altar of diversity."

Sara Bolton, Derby City Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "This is an unfortunate case. But these laws are in place for the good of the children in our care.

"We need to treat everybody fairly because we're looking after vulnerable children and therefore we need to keep strictly to the legislation and the policy."

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened.  Please see this FR thread from last year involving a different family.

I would teach my kid how to fight...(is that a wrong answer in PC England?)

With all due respect, it's because you underestimate how truly evil these people are. The New Butt Order trumps everything else--including the ability of a good, Christian family to care for an orphan.

The time is coming when Christians are going to have to simply refuse to act in accord with the unjust laws of the secular state.

Sorry, 10 year olds do not understand that yet to choose. Yes I said choose, it is a choice.

My 10 year old would be heading for the Christian counselor and less public indoctrination.

Where is that article about the UK gay men who molested dozens of foster children paced in their care, after being proclaimed as “poster boys” for gay adoptions?

So will the Brits apply this rule to muslim foster families or do they only discriminate against Christians?

"They were asking: "What would you do if a 10 year-old child came home and said they had been picked on because they were homosexual?"

First of all sexuallity is learned behavior. Your not born gay, you learn to become gay, just like no one is born a pediophile. So I ask him who is teaching him to be gay, find the sumbitch and open fire. Next stupid question?

Romans 1:25-27 tells us that same-sex sexual relationships are a consequence of idolatry. In other words, such relationships are a consequence of disobeying the 1ST COMMANDMENT, a major aspect of the GREATEST COMMANDMENT, to love the jealous God with all your being.

Homosexuals need to keep in mind, however, that the good news of the gospel is not about how God despises same-sex sexual relationships. In fact, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 indicates that certain members of that church had been slaves to such relationships but had been cleansed in Jesus' name. So these former homosexuals had evidently repented and accepted God's grace to straighten their lives out.

The Brits are sick. And that’s why the Muslims are going to take that country over.

We need to look in the mirror here in the US too.

We claim to be 70%+ Christian yet we continue to elect politicians who do not understand the proper role and function of government, church, family and individual governance. We wring our hands about homosexual indoctrination in the government school system (pagan academies) when our children should not even be enrolled in these anti-American institutions. If Christians pulled their children out of the local communist indoctrination centers we would see a quick revival of traditional family life here in America.

While some of the blame for the current liberal humanistic social unpleasantness can be laid at the feet of an ACLU-supporting and infiltrated judiciary, our modern Christian churches have stood on the sidelines of the culture war and have ignored or even supported the war on true constitutional federalism. Where was the church when Judge Roy Moore was making his brave stand in Alabama?

I identify with the sentiment, but if we are sending our children into an environment where we know they will be exposed to all sorts of anti-Christian abominations, under the direction of teacher(s) or leader(s) whose moral views are uncertain or questionable, who is ultimately responsible?

Rather than voicing ONLY their religious reasons for refusing, these fine people should tell their govt., as we all should be, that they surely would not suggest that foster parents should speak favorable about smoking! Why then would they tell them homosexuality is good, when it is 100x more dangerous? They should speak of the dangers involved in living a gay lifestyle, and state firmly that they as foster parents, cannot endorse it to any child in their care. To do so would be assisting in subjecting said children to a lifetime of mental and severe physical health problems, and their conscience will not allow them, as foster parents, to disregard the inevitable outcome of those types of actions, for the children involved. AND the govt. should not either, given the state of their (or our) health care system.

We'd see a second revolution. But that's a big IF, isn't it?

The foster parent program in the good old USA is getting sicker by the minute as well. The criteria for becoming foster parents even for blood realitives looks like it was written by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Dr Ben Spock. I went through it a few months back and it was a real eye opener. The courts as well are perp friendly.

We adopted 2 boys from the local county in which we reside. The process took a very long time due to many different obstacles but we eventually adopted the boys.

In the mean time we were foster parents going through the fos-adopt problem. At the end of the process we considered adopting a girl but then came a flyer in the mail... To continue the process we would have to take a class on encouraging homosexual behavior in children who were homosexual. We would not be able to tell the children the truth.

So we never adopted again.

The fact of the matter is nobody is born with their same-sex attraction. Science supports this fact yet generation after generation continue to believe a lie and today's leaders continue to push a really bad social experiment.
