I knew a physical anthro buff who swore that Cro Magnon and Neanderthal coexist today. Anyone know about this theory? (serious)

The basic idea, as I recall, is that white europeans of large chinned, large nosed, heavy brow appearance are that way because they are part neandertal.
Gérard Depardieu is often cited as an example.
I once knew a young woman that had a face very similar to gerard’s. I’ll tell you what, she was built like a neandertal too. Pear shaped, but solid as a rock. Size 12 shoe, etc.
I saw an anthropologist on (I think) the History Channel who claimed that Cro Magnons and Neanderthals interbred and there are people walking around today who have a lot of Neanderthal genes. As far as I can tell, this isn’t provable unless they get some Neanderthal DNA to compare with that of people today.
Then there are others who claim that interbreeding between Cro Magnons and Neanderthals would not have been possible.
I read that the Neanderthals were physically much more massive than us. That the tendon attachment points on their bones are huge in comparison to ours.
I know when I see a skinny guy with comparatively large hands and massive wrists I know not to arm-wrestle him.
