he Mercury News cut 50 jobs Friday through a combination of layoffs and buyouts, and named new business and editorial page editors to replace managers who accepted buyouts.
Barbara J. Marshman, associate editor, will replace Stephen E. Wright as editorial page editor. She is the first woman to hold that job at the Mercury News.
Deputy business editor Stephen R. Trousdale replaces Rebecca Salner as business editor.
The appointments were announced by Editor David J. Butler.
Fifteen newsroom employees and 19 employees from other parts of the paper were laid off Friday. Earlier in the week, 16 employees accepted buyout offers, five from the newsroom. The reductions represent a cut of about 5 percent for the newspaper.
Marshman, 59, joined the Mercury News editorial board in 1988 after a year at Stanford University on a John S. Knight Fellowship. She became associate editor in 1990. Prior to the fellowship, Marshman, a graduate of West Chester University in Pennsylvania, was managing editor of The Pottstown Mercury in Pennsylvania.
Trousdale joined the Mercury News in September 2006 from the Contra Costa Times, where he had been editor of the paper's award-winning business section. He also was co-head of the paper's investigative team. Previously, he was business editor of the Torrance Daily Breeze in Southern California and managing editor for nearly a decade of the Los Angeles Daily Journal. He graduated from Stanford in 1985.
"Barbara and Steve are veteran editors and I am confident will do a terrific job in these new posts," Butler said.

Ironically, The San Jose Mercury was the first newspaper on the web and it pioneered the business model.
I am enjoying the slow painful death throws of the “Murky News”.....
It’s good to see the rag die from a combination of Leftist garbage and non-English reading constituency...
