House Dems From Florida: 'Opposed to mail-in campaign or any redo of any kind'
Politico ^ | March 11, 2008 | Ben Smith

For a moment, it looked like party leaders were marching toward a Florida revote. But Obama's campaign signaled today that the mechanics would be an obstacle, and Florida's congressional delegation just took a hard line against a re-vote in a joint statement:

Washington, DC – The Members of Florida’s Democratic Delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives issued the following statement regarding the seating of Florida’s delegates at the DNC National Convention this August.

“We are committed to working with the DNC, the Florida State Democratic party, our Democratic leaders in Florida, and our two candidates to reach an expedited solution that ensures our 210 delegates are seated.

“Our House delegation is opposed to a mail-in campaign or any redo of any kind.”

The state GOP parties must sue to block any revote in Florida and Michigan. The argument is simple: it cannot be guaranteed that voters who voted in the Republican primaries would not be able to vote in the Democrat revotes. This would result in the revote infringing on the Republican primaries already held and corrupting their outcomes. It would also raise 14th amendment issues on equal protection grounds. Democrats cannot have their votes counted one way while Republicans' votes are counted another. Any revote would have to be applied statewide, something the GOP should also object to. Any revote would have to be done statewide and paid for by the Democrat party, not the taxpayers.

The affected state GOP parties should wait until the last minute and then file an injunction against the revotes from proceeding. Let the Democrats fight it out and spend lots of money, and then shut it down at the last minute so they miss the deadline.

Then the RNC needs to come out prior to the Democrat convention and very publicly declare that all sanctions against seating delegates will be lifted at the GOP convention, and all GOP delegates will be counted, because not to do so would disenfranchise the votes of millions of people.

This will put incredible pressure on the Democrats to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates, leading to an all out civil war within their party, including lawsuits from Al Sharpton. It will be a lose/lose situation for Democrats.

Well, if the Florida and Michigan delegates are seated, they are Hillary’s.

i doubt they’ll be seated to benefit hillary. in the summer, the democrat with the most delegates controls the rules. it will likely be up to obama whether or not to seat michigan and florida as is...and odds are he wont do something to advantage hillary. im thinking it will be a 50/50 split which will infuriate the clinton’s and her supporters.

pass the popcorn :)

If Fla's delegates are seated from January's election, team mrs bill clinton nets +38 in the delgate count, not counting Fla's super delegates that are currently wiped out.

A revote would net the same result.

What? I don’t think Obama runs the DNC...

The Democrats won’t pay for a revote...and Hillary is not going to go for the 50/50 idea....

I don’t know what they will do...but it is a mess.

strangely enough, the clintons are arguing for a redo in michigan but obama may win michigan if held today, according to polls.

Soros is such a tightwad. He could afford to pay for the DemocRATS to revote in both Michigan and Florida. It would be just a fraction of what he spends on 527 organizations each year. Don’t Michigan and Florida keep track of which primary voters voted in? I know in Texas the counties keep track of that; if you vote in the Republican primary, you can’t vote in the DemocRAT runoff. In a redo of the DemocRAT primary, wouldn’t it be pretty simple to not allow any ballot to be submitted from anyone who voted in the Republican primary.

control over the rules turns from the dnc to the nominee in the summer (or in this case, the person with the most delegates which is likely to be obama)

i was watching cnn and he seemed to hint that he wanted them seated in a way that “doesnt advantage either candidate” ie. 50/50 split of delegates from both states.

again...get your popcorn ready! :)

Indeed.
And maybe Hillary will win the nomination.
And then she will have been “selected, not elected”, “stole the vote in Florida”, and stole the nomination from a black man through racist tactics.

It sure will be fun to watch, won’t it?
But of course the stupid, neutered, self-destructive Republicans will probably bend over backwards to help bail the Democrats out of their predicament so both sides (of the Democrat party) are satisfied with the resolution.

It’s not the end result that I care about so much as the in-fighting taking place among the Democrats as long as there is no solution that everyoneone can agree upon. A revote is an opportunity for to legitimize the delegate counts that everyone can make peace upon. We want to prevent that.

I thought both candidates had to agree to the solution.
Hillary will not go for the 50/50 deal....no way.
The only way she can win is to seat Michigan and Florida...or win in a rematch.

She isn’t going to go for 50/50.

I suspect that the Florida congressional delegation may not speak for the Florida party. They decided to hold an early primary in order to increase their significance with the candidates. It didn’t work first time around because the national committee convinced the candidates [except Hillary] to not participate.

However, this time around they would get LOTS of attention. Why would they pass this up?

Democrats cannot have their votes counted one way while Republicans' votes are counted another.

You must be kidding right? Why does it matter to Republicans how the Dems choose their nominee? No one but the Democratic party has any say in how they chose their nominee. If they want to hold whatever or however many elections they want, it has no bearing on any other party. Nice try, but one of the more specious arguments I've heard on here yet.

MC-

They’re just RINO McCainites giggling at the possibilities they see as “likely”. They’d better count THEIR OWN pinche gallinas to try to shore up McNasty’s lack of support nationwide.

Actually, Hillary abided by the rules in Florida.
It was Obama who broke the ‘Four State Pledge’ by airing national campaign ads on Florida TV.

The pledge the Democrats all signed was simply not to campaign in any state that jumped ahead of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. There was nothing in the pledge requiring the candidates to remove their names from the ballot or to accept the delegates not being seated.

The reason Obama and others removed their names from the Michigan ballot (but not the Florida one) is because Hillary was going to walk away with it anyways, and they wanted to deny her a clear victory. I believe Edwards was the one who initiated it, as usual.

Obama and other also-rans withdrew from Michigan unilaterally and without any prompting, as if it was Iraq.
Why should Hillary be punished for their scheming?
