Kids today don’t have many of the opportunities we had.
In the late 50’s there were labor shortages and we worked in construction, retail, landscaping etc in the summer..and some evenings. When I look at my SS statement, I can see that I was earning a lot of money, beyond minimum wage, when I was in HS. A lot of kids paid for their college tuition just with their summer work..especially boys who worked construction.

Correct.
In my college days, clerking in a store or something similar paid about $1.65 an hour. Hot mop roofing (in southern California no less) paid about $5 to $7.00. This was many decades ago, but now hot mopers are lucky to get $10 an hour. And being too tired to party allow me to save a lot.

Kids today will not cut their own lawns, deliver newspapers, wash dishes, plow sidewalks or other myriads of jobs we used to do.
To a large extent the parents are very much at fault, providing everything from $200.00 sneakers to all sorts of electronics, cell phones etc. without much expected in return.
