McCain asked to be be transfered back to an active duty ship when it became apparent that the Forrestal would be out of action for an extended period. This was TWO MONTHS after the accident.
This is another one of the stories that keeps the mental ward here stirred up. It has absolutely no basis in fact.
The deal is that it’s just BS the left is spinning around. Not unlike the myth that the Supreme Court gave the 2000 election to Bush. Never mind that then President Clinton could have ordered a Justice Department investigation if there were any improprieties. And the next lie is that Bush orchestrated 9/11. It matters not to these people that there’s no truth to these stories, all that matters is that they keep repeating the lies loud enough and long enough to drown out the truth.
I am not saying this is true or not. But the History Channel is about as reliable as Wikipedia Wikipeda being worse.
But he did crash about 2 or 3 jets while training before he went POW. Can someone please refresh my memeory?

If that is the case as you say, I don’t see why people are trying to make hay with this. They don’t need to be making up lies to have reasons to not be in favor of McCain. If you’re going to go after someone, go after what they really did, instead of fabricating stuff up.
The only truth to the story is that McCain was on the Forrestal’s flight deck when the fire broke out. He exited his A-4 which was afire and was helping another pilot escape when a bomb exploded injuring him. He did not leave the Forrestal until after the fire was out and the Forrestal was heading for repairs. He volunteered to be transferred the the Oriskany which was short of pilots and other crew members just as he had volunteered for the combat tour on the Forrestal. Apparently some people so hate John McCain that they will say anything to smear him.
The entire event is on film. There are a lot of stills taken from it but I am sure that the complete film is available somewhere. I’ve seen it a number of times.
Here is the brief and concise synopsis:
McCain was sitting in the cockpit of his plane minding his own business.
A Zuni Rocket on an F4 Phantom facing his plane from the other side of the flight deck fired off by accident due to a combination of a design flaw in the rack for the ordinance and the Aviation Ordinancemen not following procedures.
The rocket screamed across the flight deck, hit McCain’s plane, dumping the fuel from the external tank on the deck which caught on fire, then an old style bomb cooked off, setting off a chain reaction.

That EMCON Condition became known as “HERO” (Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordinance). During “HERO” certain emitters had to be silenced.
In short, the Navy figured out that some weapons could be accidentally detonated by the multitudes of shipboard transmission equipment (radar, radios, altimeters, etc.).
The other issue is that they were using old WWII bombs because the supply was so low, and they cook off a lot faster.
The amazing part of the incident is the damage control guy immediately running towards the fire with a hand fire extinguisher. He certainly was aware the bombs could cook off at any moment. He was instantly killed by the first cook-off. I believe the USN damage control training center is named after him.

Post fire investigation revealed that the airwing was at fault for not standardizing pre-launch ordinance arming procedures. Arming aircraft prior to moving them to catapault was verbotten. It wasn’t McCain’s fault...he was very lucky to survive.

Uh, but it would be best if before posting such accusations, you did a little bit of searching, first? The info on the Forrestal incident is widely enough available.

Yes...I gave the “concise” version.
I spent four years working on the flight deck of the USS JFK, and the Forrestal fire was inculcated into all of us.
We were taught about what caused it and the mistakes that were made.
We often heard older sailors say when guys got lax, that “It was shit like that the caused the Forrestal Fire...”
