Blaring at readers from newspapers across the nation was continuing evidence of the press' obsession for benchmarks of servicemen who've sacrificed their lives in Iraq, as if the 3,999th soldier to die -- or for that matter, the first -- merited no mention.
This issue isn't about freedom of the press. It's about journalistic ethics. The media circle like vultures waiting for the next lapse in government accountability, but demands virtually unlimited freedom to use anonymous sources.
Who polices the "policemen of democracy?" Why, they do, of course, creating their own rules of conduct (such as "Deliberate distortion is never permissible") and measuring themselves against those rules.
Readers need to ask what information is not in news reports out of Iraq. What is emphasized and what is not? In the Tribune's case, the emphasis is reflected by a dozen column-inches devoted to bombings and body counts and only one inch of small print to report a 60 percent drop in violence since Bush ordered the surge. The Tribune chose that emphasis. True, such decisions about emphasis often reflect practical exigencies: space allocation, advertising, newswire verbiage and newsprint costs.

Uh, duh...
It's actually a pretty good editorial. I have always wondered why liberals, including the rank and file newspaper editors, want the Islamists to win. I keep waiting for someone to ask this of Chris Matthews.
Admitting upfront to not having read full article.
Vietnam war 10 yrs 58000+ dead, source MSM

Bump to a good article and comments being made on it.
bump
I can’t speak with authority here since I haven’t read a newspaper in years because of bias.
The paperboy keeps throwing a free copy on my driveway and it always ends up in the recycle bin. Don’t even read the comics.
They lost me years ago.
” if readers want a more accurate, complete perspective of the war, about the thousands of kind acts of our servicemen have performed, about the lives that have been saved rather than lost, and about how American investment in lives and resources is transforming Iraq, they’d best seek information someplace other than in newsprint.”
Now wait a minute here. I'll have to consult the NYT for a more truthful opinion about this matter.
Don't know if it's instinct or the way he describes the whole thing....he sounds like another "phony soldier" who is as liberal as a box of butterflies.
Usually when a serviceman speaks, especially on this subject, a few word or two of military jargon slips in.
Inside, I think this guy was actually over there to the same degree that I would think Gomer Pyle was an actual Marine.
I get all my information from random blog comments.
“Water Wet” ping.
Thanks george76.
Bump — Thanks weldgophardline
Glad to see the Greeley Tribune published the article in the first place.
We really do need many more articles from Pro-American people, but I’m like dhs12345 and have given up on papers years ago, and recycle any that show up unwanted. That may be the reason we have so few Pro American articles -— Thank You Chuck Fisher, for still reading the Greeley Tribune and writing that article, and weldgophardline also for reading the Greeley Tribune and letting the rest of us know about it.
From the comments to the article in the paper, many of the Anti-American folks can’t even tolerate the article to be there in the first place. That deserves another BIG Thank You to Chuck Fisher, and your two sons.
Propagandist of the highest order.
Aw, maaaan....
Then how the heck am I supposed to find out what's going on in Iraq??
