Moms mobilize to stop moth spraying [California]

The vision of airplanes rumbling slowly over San Francisco, spraying a pesticide mist on parks and playgrounds, has now mobilized one of the most effective lobbying groups in the world.

Moms.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture's plan to eradicate the light brown apple moth with aerial spraying over the city this summer was already in an uphill fight. But when 100 or so mothers and kids showed up at City Hall on Monday afternoon with signs like "Keep Your Spray Off My Baby," it was clear that the battle had entered a new phase.

"Nothing gets people more irate than a government institution spraying their kids from a plane," said Jared Blumenfeld, director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. "It's a bad movie. And nobody wants to be in that movie."

Lynn Murphy, a mother of two, was at Monday's rally, somewhat surprised to be chanting "Stop the Spray" along with everyone else.

"I don't consider myself an activist," said Murphy, who lives a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, where the most moths have been found so far in the city. "But when it comes down to your children and protecting your family, it seems so much more urgent. I never thought I would be talking to my 4-year-old and telling her that we are going up to the state Capitol to talk to politicians."

My husband grew up on an ORCHARD....with heavy duty spraying (commercial fruit).....no one in his family has had problems with cancer, except colon and prostate - at later stages of life (i.e. kinda normal). I suppose the immune systems of people could affect their susceptibility...but, that’s a crapshoot.

You sure do have a lot of faith in the government. I don’t.

"Nothing gets people more irate than a government institution spraying their kids from a plane,"

It would be acceptable if they were doing it from a truck?

Find out what day they are going to spray and keep your kids inside. Problem solved.

Why is that normal? I don't consider cancer to be a normal condition of aging.

Since you know so much, why don’t you tell me?

BTW, this is just hysteria from the usual loons in San Francisco. I’ve lived in the Central Valley and can’t imagine similar reactions there.

It's not as easy as that. It's obvious they won't spray in Never Never Land (where you say you are located). What about all the workers that day? Are the streets of San Francisco going to be deserted because of the spraying? Is that even possible?

I have faith in science that I understand. You are acting on emotion and ignorance the way everything else is done in San Francisco and liberal bastions across the country.

The name of the pesticide is already on this thread.

I love the smugness of the people who aren't going to be sprayed.

So, it’s liberal to not want to have a pesticide sprayed over the entire city every month for 10 years?

Elk Grove, California. I guess they won’t be spraying your neighborhood, so you can smugly call the rest of us names.

Actually I grew up in the San Fernando Valley during two wars over medfly spraying in the 1970s and 1980s. Both times to make a point to friends and neighbors I stood outside as the helicopters came over late at night to demonstrate how safe it is.

What science is it that you understand? Where have you read that pesticides are GOOD for you?

As I said, we really have no idea whether the spraying was a causitive factor or not. Nor do I know if the spraying has continued. What is known, however, is that there was a high incidence of cancer in that area at the time.

Well...you posted a bunch of links to alarmist websites and left it at that.

Are you aware that a pheromone is not a traditional pesticide like Malathion (which itself is non toxic)? Do you have any clue about inert fillers? Have you read anything other than Silent Spring and those alarmist/pseudo-scientific sources upthread?

What point were you trying to make? That pesticides are safe? Do you work for DOW Chemical (or another chemical company)?

Pesticides keep down molds, fungus, and pests. That's good for me and the food I buy. Do you live with ants in your home? Do you eat apples with worms in them? Oranges with maggots. Pesticides are good and they have resulted in immeasurable improvements in health and prosperity the world over.
