The Hillary Deathwatch
Slate ^ | April 16, 2008 | Chadwick Matlin

A morning endorsement from Bruce Springsteen will help Obama dominate the news cycle heading into tonight's debate. That, coupled with some new poll numbers and a newspaper endorsement, helps drag Clinton's ship down by two points to a 10.4 percent chance of winning the nomination.

Obama may have E Street to thank if he ever lives on Pennsylvania Avenue. Bruce Springsteen endorsed Obama today, the first mega-celebrity to endorse since Oprah, Babs, and the gang in January. While Obama could've used the Boss' backing before New Jersey's primary on Feb. 5 (Obama lost by 10 points), today's timing actually works well for Obama. Springsteen is a perfect emissary for the campaign in the wake of Obama's "cling" comments in San Francisco. The Boss acknowledges as much and writes in his endorsement that "[w]hile these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision." If Obama can coax Springsteen onto the trail in Pennsylvania, that will start to nullify Clinton's and McCain's claims that he's an elitist. The less traction Clinton gets on that issue, the more desperate she looks. Desperate candidates don't become the nominee.....

The polls, meanwhile, are grim for Clinton. More surveys are starting to include the post-bitter landscape, and none of the reputable outfits shows a major shift toward Clinton. New Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg data show Clinton ahead by just five points in Pennsylvania. Public Policy Polling (PDF) has Obama in the lead by three points. A glimmer of sunshine: She demolishes him in Kentucky, according to SurveyUSA.

Another mega-celebrity who I know nothing about other than having heard of him. I don’t live in a cave, but I really don’t care about who the MSM says is important.

Mr Springsteen is not so typical or common man these days .... as his palatial NJ homes in Colts Neck and Rumson, his beach club in Sea Bright make him even more elitist than Obama

Yes the title does F_O_D, but do not pin it on us, the Slate said it.

I Am amazed. Can anyone this talented musically (usually a sign of high math skills) be this vacuous?

I know Bruce is blue collar, but how about a summer off and take the following courses:

Econ 101, Personal Finance, Tax Prep and Accounting 101, but alas even after all this he still wouldn't get why Obamanomics would be a disaster.

The lack of knowledge about economics, History, and what Evil truly is amongst the glitteratte' is enough to make you fear for the Republic......

the first mega-celebrity to endorse

The only time I EVER hear anything about Bruce Springsteen is during an election year when he comes out and endorses the dummyrat.

At least Oprah is often in the news. Has BS even released an album in the past 20 years?? Mega-celebrity indeed. How about Has-Been?

"[w]hile these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision."

Dims and their supporters, mentors, pastors and sycophants get taken out of context so often.

Dang. All us backwoods, small-town hicks obviously just don't understand the English language.

Guess that is what happens when we have been bitter for so many decades.

If Obama can coax Springsteen onto the trail in Pennsylvania, that will start to nullify Clinton's and McCain's claims that he's an elitist.

Even if Springsteen leaves his Mansion on the Hill for another "Vote for Change" tour, the effect will be insignificant.

Springsteen used to pull in the crowds.
This spring in Indianapolis he couldn’t fill a 18,000 seat arena even half full per the newpaper account.
