Al-Sadr May Restart Full-scale Fight Against US in Iraq

BAGHDAD - Muqtada al-Sadr is considering setting aside his political ambitions and restarting a full-scale fight against U.S.-led forces — a worrisome shift that may reflect Iranian influence on the young cleric and could open the way for a shadow state protected by his powerful Mahdi Army.

A possible breakaway path — described to The Associated Press by Shiite lawmakers and politicians — would represent the ultimate backlash to the Iraqi government's pressure on al-Sadr to renounce and disband his Shiite militia.

By snubbing the give-and-take of politics, al-Sadr would have a freer hand to carve out a kind of parallel state with its own militia and social services along the lines of Hezbollah in Lebanon, a Shiite group founded with Iran's help in the 1980s.

It also would carry potentially disastrous security implications as the Pentagon trims its troops strength and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki finally shows progress on national reconciliation.

Last week, the main Sunni political bloc announced provisional plans to rejoin the Shiite-led coalition nine months after quitting the government. The Sunnis are pleased with the squeeze on al-Sadr's movement as well as an amnesty law that could free many detainees.

Not sure, but every time he initiates a “full scale fight” his terrorist minions get slaughtered. I’m sure he will restart it from a safe place in Iran.

It is part of the plan to goad him into a fight. the Iraqi army is strong enough now to deal with him as long as we provide air support. Malaki wants Sadr and his boys dealt with while Bush is still around. Timing is perfect to destroy him. Basra is already bacj under gov’t control and the people are happy to see Sadr’s thugs gone. Sadr City is next on the list and then no more mortars into the green zone will we see. MSM reports this threat as bad news when in actuality it shows Sadr is getting weaker not stronger.

Whatever this guy's smoking, he ought to stop. As if the presence of a hundred thousand plus American troops not to mention Airpower backing up tens of thousands of Iraqi troops might not just put a crimp in such adolescent fantasy.

Why is it no one wonders what we should do to the American political leaders who sit by and allow and have allowed this subhuman to keep breathing?

Sadr - Poster child for the “P” word. He puts his guys out to the slaughter, and then calls a timeout whenever he gets within two weeks of losing his own ass.

We could probably just take away his knife and fork, and be done with him.

Seems to me like Sadr City would be perfect for the newest Lake in Iraq - Lake Conquest. Bomb the city and then fill it with water and build resorts along the banks...sounds likea nice economic plan to me!

We;ve trained up a respectable Iraqi Army, as this clip of a recent action against the miscreant in Sadr City...The new Iraqi Army is leading the charge with our Spec Opts advising/

One thing the new Army knows is "G0-GO-GO!"

In the video, that sound that sounds like a big, VERY BIG angry bee is today's version of the Gatling gun.

He’s not. Hasn’t been seen on real time TV in many months. Various reports conflict on where he is. Somebody is running his crew in his name.
