The Senate Ethics Committee says he should never have picked up the phone, but that it found no substantial evidence Sen. Pete Domenici tried to improperly influence an ongoing investigation when he called then-U.S. Attorney David Iglesias in October 2006.
The committee made its finding in what it called a "Public Letter of Qualified Admonition" issed to the longtime Republican senator on Thursday.
The ethics committee said Domenici should have known that his call "created an appearance of impropriety that reflected unfavorably on the Senate."
Domenici, who plans to retire from the Senate after 36 years early next year, called the finding favorable.
The ethics committee looked into whether Domenici acted improperly when he made a late-night phone call to then -U.S. atttorney for New Mexico David Iglesias in October 2006 to ask about the status of possible federal indictments in a public corruption investigation involving prominent Democrats.
Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., a Domenici protege, was at the time locked in a tight general election contest with then-state Attorney General Patricia Madrid, a Democrat.
Iglesias later testified to Congress that he "felt pressured " by the call.
Domenici at the time denied trying to exert pressure on Iglesias to issue indictments but also apologized for the call.
On Wednesday, Domenici said: "I am gratified the Senate Ethics Committee has concluded its inquiry favorably ... Nevertheless ... I regret the distraction this controversy has caused my colleagues, my staff, my family, and most importantly, my constituents."

Have these scumbags on this so-called “ethics” committee ever investigated a DemocRAT or do they just take it for granted that most ‘RATS are so corrupt that it’s really a waste of time messing with them?
Unfortunately, yes. So sad.
BTW, did the ethics committee ever consider the case of Senator Craig? Or on their own side, Senator Reid's purchase of that land in Nevada across from a Colorado River bridge he pushed to have approved?
Pete’s retiring now, so let’s hope he can retire in peace. I was invited to his retirement party in May, but I don’t think I’m going to go. I’ve been very unhappy with him over immigration, and I’ve let him know what I think about it. He might just take the opportunity to whack me. LOL!
Reid wormed his way out of that even though he was tied to the mob in it. I blame that on the cowardice of the GOP. They have NO spine!
