Boris Johnson poised to become London Mayor as Tories seal local election success By Robert Winnett Last updated: 6:27 PM BST 02/05/2008 Boris Johnson is preparing to be unveiled as the new mayor of London later today following Labour’s collapse across Britain in the local elections.

Senior Conservative sources said they would be “gobsmacked” if Mr Johnson did not win the mayoral contest and even Downing Street aides appear to have conceded that Ken Livingstone has lost. Confidence of a Tory win was boosted after one bookmaker announced it was paying out on a Boris Johnson victory hours before the official result is expected later this evening.

Paddy Power said the "mauling" Labour had received elsewhere in England and Wales suggested the Conservative candidate was on his way to City Hall.

Winning the London mayoral contest is expected to cap an historic electoral win for the Conservatives with David Cameron’s party on course for more than 44 per cent of the national vote. Labour is now expected to finish with as little as 24 per cent, humiliatingly pushed into third place by the Liberal Democrats on 25 per cent.

Labour has lost more than 300 council seats – the worst result since the 1960s – and the Conservatives are expecting to win between 230 and 240 extra councillors. This morning, Labour announced it had lost Reading, its last council in the south outside London, while the Conservatives won North Tyneside as the party continued to make inroads in the north and Wales.

A modest improvement.

Today's Tories are really just Labor-lite and but a shadow of Maggie Thatcher's group of inspired men and women.

A slight speed bump on Britain's inexorable road to oblivion.

A metaphor for the relationship of today’s Republicans with the party of Ronald Reagan.

The L A Times story I read this morning noted his losing to Boris by a small amount.

The reality:

It turned out to be a conservative title wave in England as the Conservatives took a massive increase and the leftist labor party now has the smallest number of MP’s in generations.

Let’s see, conservatives win in Germany, France, Italy and now in the UK (albeit not a national election). I wonder what implications it has for our election.

First thought that comes to my mind is that the Brits are fed-up with gas prices.

Considering the damage created by the many of the policies of the current “compassionate” conservative occupant of the White House, I wouldn’t be so optimistic.

The border issue, globalization, and loss of American jobs, plus the increase in consumer prices may make it extremely difficult for the Repubs to pull their chestnut out of the fire if the Obamaians and Hillerites kiss and make up.

America needs to re-constitute a real conservative party, based on opposition to globalism, the U.N., Mexican invaders, and support for traditional American values.

We have no one left to speak for us now that the McCainites and Bushies have psuhed the party to the left nationally.

These were only the council elections - no MPs were harmed in the making of these results. But yes it is great news for Conservatism. Despite its somewhat CINO leadership, the Tory party contains many who are actual conservatives - especially at the Council level.

And it is the BEST NEWS FOR YEARS about Red Ken. Ha ha ha ha!

Perhaps, but first America absulutely, positively has to keep Obama and Clinton out of the White House this year. This takes precedence over all other considerations, IMO.

Do you really think BP will sell oil domestically for a anything lower than world market prices?

First we have to get a conservative in the race who doesn't get bumped out in the early rounds.

I won’t argue with that - its my goal.

But that is just the immediate future. The rest if long range.

If McCain beats Obama or Hillary, that is just the first victory in a long series of battles which will continue with him throughout his term. Hopefully he will not get nominated to a second.

I agree. But lose this election and the results will be disasterous. Defeat in Iraq and a Democratic President appointing up to six Supreme Court justices. We can't let that happen. Everyone who plans to vote third party or sit this one out needs to really contemplate the consequences of that decision.
