Analysis: House GOP hits new low, faces bleak Nov.
The Hill ^ | 05/14/08 | Jackie Kucinich and Bob Cusack

The sky is falling on House Republicans and there is no sign of it letting up.

The GOP loss in Mississippi’s special election Tuesday is the strongest sign yet that the Republican Party is in shambles. And while some Republicans see a light at the end of the tunnel, that light more likely represents the Democratic train that is primed to mow down more Republicans in November.

The third straight House special election loss in three conservative districts this year is a clear indication that the GOP brand is turning off voters and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is in disarray.

In the wake of the devastating loss, the first question facing House Republican leaders is whether they will keep Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) as NRCC chairman. Speculation has been rampant that Cole would be asked to step down should Republicans lose in Mississippi, and on Tuesday that chatter intensified.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will be under tremendous pressure to do something dramatic after the trio of losses. Boehner has publicly clashed with Cole over staffing and lackluster fundraising numbers but despite their differences, their political futures are tied together.

Significant gains by House Democrats this fall would likely lead to Boehner and Cole losing their leadership posts. Travis Childers (D), who narrowly defeated Greg Davis (R) on Tuesday, will push the Democrats’ total in the House to 236 members. With six months to go until the elections, political analysts and observers are suggesting Democrats could reach 250 in the next Congress.

Republicans still don't get it. They have to return to first principles, to conservatism, before they can expect to attract popular support. None of this bodes well for Nov.

“Analysis: House GOP hits new low, faces bleak Nov.”

They’ll take it as a sign to move even further left, solidifying their hold on the title “the stupid party.”

Conservatism is the best political philosophy.

What seems to be lacking is a unified definition of just what conservatism is, and candidates talented enough to sell the philosophy to voters.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) does not see it that way. He issued a warning to Republicans that, unless the party changes course, the GOP is headed for disaster in the 2008 elections.

A prophet is not without honor save in his own land.

I've been saying this for 6 years on FR: Most Republicans are dumb, lazy, gutless, and overpaid.

My prediction is the McCain will win the Presidency and the Democrats will pick up seven or eight Senate Seats and 30 House Seats.

However, the Government will not be Gridlocked but instead President McCain will transfer from the Straight Talk Express to the Straight to Socialism Express engineered by Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Hillary Clinton.

the congressional GOP has no unifying beliefs and no notable accomplishments. They think their best strategy for re election is to keep their heads down and hide. Out with all of them. They deserve to be fired.

Whigs of the 21st century, and they’re too dumb to even see it coming. We’re going to have a chance to rebuild from the ground up IF Pelosi and co. don’t destroy the Republic first.

The Congressional GOP is devoid of leadership. They are quite happy to sit in the back and pick up whatever crumbs the rats will throw their way.

You know you have a problem when a lifetime conservative Republican like me is planning to vote for Obama rather than the McCainiac.

The McCainiac will be the final nail in the GOP coffin if he’s elected.

I saw the same thing happen in my own state. They embraced a liberal who was deemed “electable,” but only wanted to use the party for his own goals. In the end he destroyed the party and it has never recovered. I’m not making that mistake again. Better to give up the citadel to the enemy and retreat and regroup and restore your integrity, rather than be so misguided as to support someone who will destroy you from within.

That's very true. There are a lot of conservative texts, but no single book that I know of encapsulates it all.

"All Bush's Fault" . . .

He should have told the truth about Iraq's WMD being smuggled to Syria by Russian Spetnaz Troops. Putin is a KGB snake. I've been raising hell about Russkie treachery for three years. Now it is almost too late.

The White House must tell the truth before August ! Otherwise the Democrats will enjoy a spectacular rejuvenation from their Convention.

My followup analysis of today's GOP:

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire

We don't need no water let the @#$%er burn!

Yes, Obama, I'm bitter, just not for the reasons you think...

lifetime Conservative Republican, as you so proudly describe yourself, would never vote for a Democrat and most especially one of the caliber of Hussein Obama. Not voting as some here have said would be their response to McCain as the nominee is one thing (and it is also wrong) but to ACTIVELY seek to put a man who directly threatens the safety and security of every American is quite another.

My belief is this forum is literally infested with make believe Republicans and Conservatives who despite their length of time as members are no more then lefty pretenders. people who are so obviously unintelligent as to be totally blind to the ramifications of a Hussein presidency cannot possibly be members of the Republican Party.

Gingrich is not coming late to this party. He has sounded the toxin for more than two years now.

What was it Churchill said of his own position at the time of the fall of France when, to the horror even of his own party he must be appointed prime minister, his warnings had been so clear and so terribly vindicated the none now could deny him.

I am not suggesting that Gingrich is a Churchill, but he is light-years of all the other curs and hacks who just lost the election in Mississippi, who can't raise a dime, who have no spokesman, no plan, no platform, no cause, and no constituency.

For god's sake, show me something better!
