Latest evidence of the Smoke Nazis

The Preamble to the Constitution really does not contain the words above in red. There is a segment of government and society, however, that is confused on this issue: those boosters of Big Government and the Nanny State.

Wikipedia defines The Nanny State as "a derogatory term that refers to state protectionism, economic interventionism, or regulatory policies, and the perception that these policies are becoming institutionalized as common practice."

It's a sign of how far down the road to Nannyism the U.S. has traveled that the Wiki definition includes the qualifier, "the perception that these policies are becoming institutionalized as common practice."

Anyone older than 30 can even remember when the words "A man's home is his castle" actually meant something in a court of law. And anyone older than 40 can recall when those five words--sure to a rile any Nannyist--were commonplace: "Ain't none of your business".

The incident that sparked these reminiscences was the appearance, on the door of the neighborhood tavern, of the sign pictured at the beginning of this post. It's a sign that has been ordered to be placed on every bar and tavern in the state of West Virginia.

The Smoke Nazis, like their earlier namesakes, know that "public health dangers" is one way government can get its citizens in the habit of giving up personal freedoms. And Smoke Nazis see "Danger" everywhere that smoking takes place.

They just never give up. Smoking is a way to take away freedoms and regulate, all the while, feeling sanctified.

Coming next: bans on smoking in outdoor patios attached to pubs and restaurants; bans on smoking near the doors of government buildings; bans on smoking in public parks or beaches; bans on smoking on sidewalks; bans on smoking in your car, if children are present; bans on smoking in your car; bans on smoking on apartment balconies; bans on smoking inside an apartment.

Of course, none of the above infringes on your right to smoke. /s

Lessee... Your freedom to smoke and thereby condemn yourself to some nasty, lingering and painful death should also include comdemning innocent bystanders to the same fate?

I don't think anybody (even the government) cares how you choose to kill yourself, but the rest of us would like to left out of your suicide plans.

Your post might be valid if there was any danger posed from Second hand smoke.. its all fabricated.. similar to global warming. Its BS and its made to make those who dislike the smell of smoke happy.

If you are that worried about a whiff of smoke from a tiny cigarette, better make sure you never walk around in a city where exhaust fumes fill the air.. those really ARE dangerous.

Our town placed a ban on smoking in clubs (except for private clubs) so naturally 80% of the clubs applied for a private club license. The memberships are usually $1.00 for a lifetime membership, so all that was accomplished was the clubs pay an additional fee to keep the same customers they already had. What a racket...

More than enough evidence from my own family - my father was the smoker. He died of pancreatic cancer where we had no history of cancer in our family line. My mother died of heart disease and all the rest of us had asthma and other lung problems and we're waiting for the rest.

Anybody with an IQ higher that a doorstop would understand that smoking is inherently life-threatening and would have the decency to avoid endangering others. There's more than enough science available but addicts don't read that stuff, do they?

Ahh yes, the tired old “If you don’t agree with me you must be stupid” routine. Sorry.. does not play with me.

Lots of people get cancer with no history in the family, lots of people get sick. What do ya know.. people even got sick BEFORE cigarettes were even invented! Its ever so easy way to blame smoking for every illness on earth.. pretty simple minded approach if you ask me.

Its OK however.. because I am pretty sure you have a “vice” that the nanny state is drawing up plans to bash and ban next.

Can’t smoke, eat saturated fat, or drive an SUV. Can get abortion on demand, seize other people’s property to give to someone else, and marry a person of the same sex. I get it. That’s what individual liberty is all about in America circa 2008.

I can’t stand the damned things, but agree that it is not government’s business to protect me from it.

That said, I can now comfortably go to some places where the smoke used to be oppressive. Thus, mixed feelings about it...bad legislation with good results.

You may be entitled to your opinion, but you're not entitled to your own "science".

No one has ever proven. scientifically, that second hand smoke is any riskier than, say, walking along the sidewalk of any major city street.

The only large scale study to "prove it" was quietly shelved when the wrong answer popped up.

Of course laws can be adopted that declare something as dangerous to others, and thus illegal, but this doesn't change reality.

It merely makes a distinction between what's illegal and what is real (I never thought I'd ever be having this conversation). So any hysterical babbling about my including you in my suicide plans can probably be addressed by a competent psychiatrist. No promises, though.
