When the deadline for certification passed yesterday, Jim Ogonowski, the Republican leadership's choice to challenge US Senator John F. Kerry, was 82 signatures short of qualifying for the GOP primary ballot, according to the state's central voter registry.
But Ogonowski's campaign aides contend there are enough certified signatures at various town offices around the state not filed yet on the computerized registry to put him across the 10,000 threshold.
Local election clerks were legally required to finish their certifications yesterday. The majority of those clerks have shipped their results to the secretary of state's office via computer, but some may still be submitting the certifications by hand.
Each campaign has until Tuesday, June 3, to deliver final signature papers to the secretary of state's office.
"We are confident that we have the required amount of signatures," said Alicia Preston, Ogonowski's press secretary.
Even if Ogonowski does get the 82 signatures he needs, his fight probably is not over.
Election specialists say he will not have the needed cushion of extra signatures to insulate himself from legal challenges.

I have done this before, get the signatures that is; if this guy can’t even get enough signatures to run, well, enough said.
Ugh.
Right, how hard is it to get 10,000 signatures? I could probably get 10,000 signatures myself by hanging out at the mall one weekend.
Unfortunately, Ogonowski doesn't have a chance no matter how many signatures he comes up with,,,this IS MA we are talking about and being a resident in MA I can tell you kerry will win hands down,,,,,heaven forbid kerry be voted out, that my FRiend would almost be as impossible as voting out a kennedy..........kerry has been sniffing around the state the last couple of months, making his presence known, letting "the people" know he's around, it is an election year afterall and heaven forbid he not pander to his people. Once he's re-elected he won't be seen again for years, unless of course there's a camera around, our nickname for him is "live shot"...........AND he lives up to the name.......
There already is another Republican running for this seat who already has qualified. His name is Jeff Beatty.
“if this guy cant even get enough signatures to run,”
If the Massachusetts political bureaucracy counts them honestly it would not be a problem.
Last time Kerry ran, the Boston Globe insisted he was running unopposed, even after his opponent got 20% of the vote.
Massachusetts is really its own socialistic country compared to the rest of the U.S. Unfortunately, the rest of the U.S. has a decent chance to really become a long-term socialistic country soon after the November 4 elections are done, starting in mid-January ‘09. Sigh.
Well, this really wasn’t the best place to be spending the NRSC’s money this year anyway. It’s Massachusetts for goodness sake. I think we should be concentrating on more winnable races anyway. This one was almost more symbolic.
Not only is Jeff Beatty already running in this race, with plenty of signatures... but Jeff is miles more qualified than Jim O’. Jeff is a strong speaker with conservative convictions, and clearly pro-life. Jim O’ is a weak speaker, and wimpy on life/choice viewpoint. This is also quite the egg-n-face for Romney, who spoke at a $1000/plate fundraiser for Jim O’ on the day that this story originally broke in the news.
If this was the other way around the rat would get a ratjudge and extend the time because after all it would be “the will of the people.”
He’ll have the signatures once ALL of the counting is done.
And apparently there are still too many people around the country who don’t know that Jim Ogonowski isn’t the ONLY Republican who is running for this seat. BTW, Jim Ogonowski should truly run again against Niki Tsongas for the Fifth Congressional seat instead of running for the U.S. Senate seat when Jeff Beatty is already running for this seat as a Republican. Good Luck, Jeff Beatty! I still don’t truly see ANY Republican making ANY significant political gains in Massachusetts with the ongoing decades old domination of the moonbat majority of voters.
Well, too late for poor Jim for this round against grandma Tsongas, as the signature deadline for both races is past. So, if Jim has any cajones, he should lend his support to Jeff, campaign for Jeff, and aim his sights against our Senior Senator’s race. He’s even got a few years head start!
Jeff Beatty did hang out at the mall...in Hanover, MA.
With Ted Kennedy’s present health problems, the Kennedy seat will probably open up very soon anyways. BTW, continued prayers for Ted and the Kennedy family. We don’t agree with each other politically, but I would never wish bad health on anyone at anytime!
Is a matter of fact, I'd also endorse it this way too:
Vote for CONSERVATIVES at all political levels! Encourage all others to do the same on November 4!
In my tagline, I emphasize AT ALL POLITICAL LEVELS to encourage all conservative voters throughout the U.S. to truly NOT STAY AT HOME ON NOVEMBER 4 just because all of the major ‘08 candidates for POTUS are not conservatives. There are true conservatives who are also running for a variety of other political offices at every political level in ‘08 who still deserve to truly be voted into political office on November 4.
LOL, 82 short?
If it were the dems, there’s no doubt they could have found at least 82 dead people .....
My comment refers to the difference between Jim O’ (a Republican) and Jeff Beatty (a Republican... AND a conservative). I certainly agree with the sentiment that ALL CONSERVATIVES must do justice to the cause by not staying home on Nov 4.
Well, June 3 has passed, and apparently Jim is still 30 votes short. Maybe next time for that other Senate race, eh? Perhaps a summer write-in campaign against Nikki?
