TEHRAN: The election of a rival to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as speaker of the Iranian Parliament is a strong signal of growing impatience with the president's economic policies and a possible sign of a political shift in the country.
The new speaker, Ali Larijani, who resigned as the country's nuclear negotiator in October over differences with Ahmadinejad, is a conservative and an ardent advocate of the Iranian nuclear program but is seen as more pragmatic in his approach and perhaps willing to engage in diplomacy with the West.
The post of speaker is normally a powerful one in Iranian politics, and Larijani's elevation also suggests that the new Parliament will be much more likely than the last one to challenge Ahmadinejad, who is up for re-election in June 2009.
In his first speech Wednesday as speaker, Larijani, who won by a vote of 232-31, said one of Parliament's top priorities would be to strengthen the economy. His lopsided victory appeared to be a rebuke of Ahmadinejad, who has faced growing dissatisfaction over grinding inflation and fresh memories of rolling blackouts last winter that left people without electricity and heat for hours at a time - even as the nation's oil revenues were soaring.

Why does this sound like a case of “Here’s the new boss... same as the old boss?”
This reminds me of all the tea leaf reading the media used to do when the Kremlin was changing power. They were always convinced that the new guy was somehow different. Once, it was a big deal that one of the gerontocrats liked jazz.
The problem in Iran is the system. Not the leader. As long as radical mullahs hold all political power, no acceptable leader can possibly arise. Things will change if the people rise up and kill the mullahs or if there's a war. Until then, it'll be tweedle dum and tweedle dee.
In other words, this Iranian Muslim Nazi is smarter then the one in power already.
Bad news for the US, especially if Hussein Obama wins. The “moderates” are worse then the “extremists” because they can lie to the infidels better.
Larijani is also a key figure in Iran's rise to nuclear power. His stance on Nukes and the US are no different.

Larinjani's "rational" and "friendly" appearance is just like the one of previous President Khatami.
They are even more dangerous than nutjobs like Ahmadinejad, because while the latter showed with his outrageous comments the world the real face of the regime, the "reformists" smoother and calmer style works great for smokes and mirrors.
Larinjani was the chief nuclear negotiator of Iran during the last years. He knows the game of diplomacy (fooling the West) and would achieve nuclear power without provoking confrontation with the West. He is a professional. Ahmadinejad is a screaming clown. If our goal is the eventual downfall of the regime, it's better to have the provocative Ahmadinejad.
Well, that’s good news, RDTF...maybe, maybe not.

Nutjob’s eyes are the most demonic I have seen of any world “leder” in my lifetime.....There is a presence behind those eyes that is definitely, IMHO, satanic.....

Actually an interesting point you are bringing up. Larijani is a Mazanderani (northern Iranian people who live in the forrest-rich southern shore region of the Caspian Sea). He has a fairer complexion and bluish eyes, as compared to Ahmadinejad who looks more like an Afghan. The Mazanderani's have preserved a great deal of ancient Persian ethnical characteristics.
