That reaction would make sense if the father views his daughter as his daughter. But what if the father views his daughter as something more -- then all of the sudden these honor killings start to make sense in terms of human nature.
The primary emotion no longer is shame, but jealousy. I wonder how often in these situations something much more perverse is going on under the cover of the father upholding 'family honor'.

Well, when a girl is still unmarried she belongs to her family. Any dishonor on her is a dishonor on the whole family. The only way to cure the dishonor is to kill the source of it - her. Once she’s married, she belongs to another family. Then it’s her husband’s problem. When wives are raped, you are more likely to see the perpetrator killed instead of her because the perpetrator has violated the husband’s property.
