Egypt has banned female circumcision. The procedure can only be carried out if there is a medical necessity to do so

Medically necessary? What sort of medical necessity could there be to carry out female circumcision?

Somewhere an Imam is drafting the fatwa that it is medically necessary for girls to have this done, so that they do not risk AIDS and HPV by being left intact.

Cancer can occur there and would usually best be treated by cutting it out. Although rare you don't want to outlaw that rare medically necessary treatment and crafting a law to outlaw the religiously motived travesty while allowing medically necessary treatment of tragic circumstances without phrases like "medically necessary" may be difficult. The proof is in how the law is interpreted and enforced. High profile enforcement of the claimed intent of this law will be needed before I, and I suspect many others here, will accept things have changed in Egypt.
