Same here. She is always complaining, you don’t want to do anything! I always have to plan out vacations! don’t you even care? I care, just not as much as she does. I am just a typical, bitter, clingy white guy I guess.

Yes, men can be boring...

When men get together for Poker, they turn on sports programs so they don’t have to talk to friends about their lives...

Yes, I too cling to my guns and religion.

"...whether Jackie Stewart was ruining Formula One by bringing up all those “safety” concerns and trying to recruit sponsor money to pay for teams...

Yup, Jackie Stewart was the worst thing ever to happen to F1...and it's gotten worse every year. Every track, even Monaco and Spa, has been ruined by stupid chicanes and design flaws that hinder actual 10/10ths racing.

Hey! I guess I qualify as not completely boring! :-) Now, about Ayn Rand....

She can do that, too.

Oh my God, I forgot about that. LOL!! I still stand by that middle part though. Two ways to get a man to talk to you:

1) Get on the phone with your Mom.
2) Start reading a book.

I am convinced that the four-letter word that ruined Formula One is *safe*!

I have a friend who married a man whom she admitted had many flaws — but she married him because he, like she, was a fanatic Red Wings fan. She said when she yelled *Did you see THAT?* she wanted a husband who answered *That Ref must be BLIND!*

Now about Ayn Rand, how would you re-write Ragnar to make him human?

It was a masterpiece; that's why I still remembered it a year and a half later.

Are you sure you stand by it? I can't imagine being chatty with someone who was trying to read. That would be obnoxious.

Pirate/philosopher Ragnar Danneskjold, resounding of Viking conquest and pagan mystery, rendered more human? I don’t think I would take that approach; his most “human” act, his encounter with Rearden in the night, was for me one of the weakest plot points in the book (I would have had him meet Rearden in the Gulch, and confined his exposition there). He’s already got Kay Ludlow, and has the potential to be the greatest philosopher in history - giving him more would unbalance the troika of John/Francisco/Ragnar. Or so I see it.

Real people do not expound; they converse. Everything Ragnar says makes me think of John Barrymore on the stage “strutting and fretting” rather than a man having a conversation with another man.

That is the only thing I meant by humanizing him; make him sound more like a human being.
