Is France America's new best friend?
Times online UK ^ | June 14 2008 | Tom Baldwin and Charles Bremner

Posted on 06/13/2008 4:59:52 PM PDT by Cincinna

President Bush heralded a “new era of transatlantic unity” when he arrived in France yesterday, with the location of his speech as significant as its content. By choosing Paris for what White House officials described as “the centrepiece” of his week-long farewell trip to Europe, Mr Bush sought to put the seal on a dramatic transformation in relations with France since President Sarkozy was elected last year.

Britain, which for so long has acted as a sometimes rickety bridge across the Atlantic, no longer has such strategic diplomatic importance. President Bush is spending two nights in Paris, but only one in London tomorrow — when he will have a private dinner with Gordon Brown after seeing the Queen. Much of his trip to Britain will be devoted to the relatively parochial issue of Northern Ireland before he heads home.

France and the US have had a love/hate relationship from the very beginning.

Under President Nicolas Sarkozy, “Sarko the American”, as the Left in France derisively named him, France has made strides and a great effort to improve French-Us relations, and it is working.

Have you read about how low Sarkozy’s approval ratings are? Bruni is not helping as each time she hits the tabloids Sark’s approval ratings drop lower.

So much for Obama’s “America has lost friends since Bush took power”
In reality, every single major Europeam country has voted conservative since Buah was in power, and the current crop of European leaders are firmly in sync with President Bush.
An loony left Obama regime however, will be another matter altogether. It is Obama who is out of touch with our allies right now. Now if u were talking about Iran, Hezbollah, Islamics Jihad, etc, then of course Obama is their candidate.

Carla, or Carlita, as Sarko calls her, is actually very popular in France. Actually. she is much more popular than her husband, even though his approval ratings have risen according to the latest polls.

This trash album won’t do either of them any good. Comparing the President of France to heroin is not a smart idea.

Her “music” is unbelievably awful.

France reneged on its promise to support a UN resolution authorizing force in Iraq. This undermined our war effort and certainly Americans died as a consequence. France can allez à l'enfer.

Ummmmmm... I think they like kinda changed governments in France since then: maybe, like, they deserve another chance, you know? Unless you’re happy for America to be held accountable for everything Clinton did — I guess that would be fair.

I'm not happy about it but maybe, like, America was held accountable on 9/11 for Clinton's actions/inactions, you know.

When push came to shove France acted as our enemy. French kiss them all you maybe like.

So, by that logic, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and the UK, and I guess even Canada too — all have acted at one time or another against US interests — they’d be your enemies too then...?

...please forgive me for saying so, but that’s just plain stupid foreign policy. Mad as a meat-ax. I’m glad you’re not in charge of the State Department.

> French kiss them all you maybe like.

There’s no love lost for France here in the South Pacific, and probably won’t be until French Polynesia is granted independence. But at least in that we’re consistent, and so are they: no changes likely for the foreseeable, despite who is in government there.

Competition is a good thing. Gordon Brown can add the accomplishment of marginalizing the Special Relationship to his stellar performance record as PM. Post 1941 Britain is the closest thing we’ve had to a true ally. At times our relationship has been utterly seamless and generally affectionate. But, if Britain doesn’t was to share the burden of our friendship along with the benefits, there are others who will surely seek to fill their space. Britain’s attitude reminds us that there is no such thing as allies, only interests.

The Supreme Court ruling today never would have happened i France. Not in a million years !

The Frenchies know how to torture captured prisoners better than anybody except the Nazis. They have had eons of experience. I suggest the Pentagon rendition captured foreign terrorists to mystery destinations controlled by France.
