When it comes to charging abuse in markets like the mortgage business, American politicians, right up the ladder, should zip their lips. They're not ones to talk.
That's becoming ever more painfully clear with reports like the one Thursday from Condé Nast Portfolio suggesting that several key pols got favored treatment on their personal mortgages.
The lucky winners included folks like Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Kent Conrad (D-ND), plus several former Cabinet secretaries: ex-Housing Secretary Alphonso Jackson; ex-Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala (who is to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday) and ex-UN Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke.
A diverse - but influential - lot.
The pols, for their part, claim they're as pure as the driven snow in all this. Dodd calls any suggestion of impropriety "outrageous he and his wife "did not seek or expect any favorable treatment."
No, of course not. Perish the thought, senator.
But already the FOA scandal has ensnared Barack Obama's veep-selection committee chairman, Jim Johnson, an ex-boss at Fannie Mae.

Surely this reporter could have found a Republican dog-catcher in Ypsilanti, Michigan who got a sweetheart deal from Countrywide in order to "balance" the story.
The reporter should be fired.
Which is why I am absolutely certain that the pubbies will be out and about and pointing this out to the American people.
For surely the pubbies don't want the opposition party to get away with this, right?
And don't forget our guy running for President, God Love Him. I am certain that next speech McCain will be lambasting these Democrats who took advantage of a well-meaning but failed (as they ALL do) social plan. Surely John McCain does not condone politicos who take advantage of such patronage, right?
Because until the pubbies, including our fine candidate beloved by the Republican base across the fruited plains, start doing something about this....these Freeper threads and our laments are a waste of time.
Somebody pull Boehner outta the the tanning booth and make that blueblood Lord give us a statement about this Democratic treachery.
Holding one's breath waiting for that would most assuredly be fatal.
Remember .. The DemocRatic ‘CountryWide’ Party is on your side. :-)
