Mike Ivey: Should Madison ban the drive-through?

First it was a proposed ban on plastic bags.

Now, a member of the influential Madison Plan Commission wants to ban the restaurant drive-through -- or at least restrict the ubiquitous symbol of America's auto-centric lifestyle.

"Given the concern about all the carbon going into the atmosphere, I'm not sure we should be building more places for people to sit idling in their cars," says Eric Sundquist, who was appointed to the citizen panel by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz this spring.

A former newspaper reporter in Atlanta now working as a researcher at the UW-Madison's Center on Wisconsin Strategy, Sundquist notes that several cities in Canada have recently moved to ban the drive-through coffee shop or stand-alone fast food restaurant "Bans haven't gotten as far in the U.S., although I know San Luis Obispo, Calif., has one," he says.

How do people become professionally stupid like this guy. Maybe it comes from eating too much Wisconsin cheese.

From reading other articles already posted on this (Drudge), I think the problem is that the Starbucks in question lies right near a traffic chokepoint. Adding a drive-thru at that location would more than likely compound the jam, so there is concern about that.

I wonder if littl ewic would get as motivated about synchronizing the traffic lights in his town, He probably never even thought about that.

Why would he care about traffic lights? You people shouldn’t even be driving cars in the first place. Get on your bike and quit complaining.

And the liberals are concerned about fast food being unhealthy too. So people shouldn’t be going to fast food in the first place. Thus they shouldn’t go through a fast food drive through.

They nitpick over crap like this yet cheer on the influx of millions of illegal aliens. Just how much pollution, congestion, eyesores, landfill, et al do they contribute.

I don’t remember the last time I went through a drive-thru - recall the words of Leo Getz (Lethal Weapon 2). Besides, sitting in the drive-thru with gas at more than $4.70 a gallon is stupid.

Ban brats, the Packers, beer and cheese too. Way too much carbon enters the atmosphere from the cheeseheads going to Lambeau Field, cooking on grills and passing gas.

If stupid were to be made illegal, there are lots of better places to start.

Unless you're paying for the gas, how is that any of your concern?

LOL! Oh this is choice. The liberal Starbuck pinheads are having to live by their own idiocy.

Hey liberal drive-through owners, be careful what you wish for.

Liberals want to ban cars. Liberals want to ban bottled water. Liberals want to ban plastic grocery bags. Liberals want to ban fast food drive-ins. The list of things liberals want to ban keeps on growing!

Does that mean the famed Tim Hortons is no longer a signature place on 401 in Ontario?

I’m more worried about Wally’s on Kingsway in Vancouver. That drive through supposedly has been there since 1947. The service sucks but the burgers are comparable to In N Out in L.A.
