Lack Of Money Hobbling 'Republican Attack Machine'
McClatchy Newspapers ^ | June 30, 2008 | Steven Thomma

WASHINGTON — Democrats and the media have used the term so much that it's almost an article of faith. But the so-called "Republican attack machine" waiting with piles of unregulated cash to chew up Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is anything but.

Obama cited the threat of unregulated attack groups — called "527s" because they're authorized to raise unlimited cash under that section of the Internal Revenue Service code — to justify dropping his pledge to take public financing — along with its spending limits — for the general election campaign.

Yet there's no 2008 equivalent to the 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which spent $22 million attacking Democrat John Kerry. Prominent groups and donors that played key roles in independent conservative 527 groups four years ago say they're sitting out this election. And while they've raised more than they did at this point four years ago, the independent pro-Republican groups still lag more than $50 million behind pro-Democratic groups.

Why? Analysts and Republican insiders point to several reasons:

_ Contributors are nervous about increased federal regulation.

_ Those who operate such groups fear a backlash, including from their better-paying corporate clients, who may not want to be associated with such attacks.

_ Few are eager to take such risks to help John McCain, who's bashed such efforts in the past and could again.

McCain beat Romney's money. Perhaps he'll have the same luck against Obama.

I'll vote for him but I'll keep my donation since I know John is above all this finance ugliness.

The drive-by media provide plenty of Republican victims. Right wing attack machine? Watta joke.

LOL. The Republican National Committee is sitting on about $200 million and is raising nearly $1 million a day.

Good to know I'm not the only one who wonders this.

Maybe when the Republican Party starts acting like small govt. conservatives again I’ll cough up some money. Till then, the RINOs can pound sand.

Let’s see: McCain against Rx drug plan, against ethanol subsidies, against pork, against spending spree, against national insurance, for personal accts, for offshore drilling. Nope. No limited govt there.

McCain beat Romney's money.

I wouldn't go that far. McCain didn't stand a chance against Romney head to head. Huckabee siphoned enough votes from Romney to let McCain slide into that nomination. Then again, you could say the same thing about Romney siphoning Huckabee votes, but I think Romney was stronger than Huckabee.

But, what-ifs won't win this election for us. I seriously doubt I'll contribute to McCain's campaign. My contribution will be to vote for him....and that will be done holding my nose.

Presently the RNC Victory 2008 alone is raising the same amount per month as the Obama campaign. The dems have no such equivalent. And that money is counted seperate from just the regular RNC funds available.

Heck, McCain just bagged $2 million last night at a KY fundraiser. The dough is starting to come in.

If you can’t stomach contributing directly to McCain, at least consider giving to the RNC Victory 2008 fund, or some PAC or 527 of your choice. Anything helps.

Pretty much all the same thing isn’t it?

“That’s the beauty of it!”

So why would anyone with two brain cells to rub together, that cannot stomache the thought of donating to McCain, bother doing this?

LOL, because it helps keep Obama out and conservatives downticket. If you can’t stand McCain, like I said, there are still other options to give.
