Lawmaker won't bring weapon today; will rely on court case to challenge ban
A state representative decided not to carry a gun into the Atlanta airport in defiance of the firearms ban there, saying he'll let a gun-rights group fight the ban in court.
State Rep. Tim Bearden (R-Villa Rica), who sponsored a new law that that took effect Tuesday and allows licensed gun owners to carry in public places, had vowed to take a gun to Hartsfield-Jackson when picking up his father.
But Tuesday morning, Bearden said he reconsidered his strategy....
"That showdown will still happen, but it will take place in the courts not in an airport parking lot," Bearden said. "We will beat them in the proper venue."
His change-of-mind came after a group called Georgia Carry said it filed a lawsuit in federal court against the city of Atlanta, which owns and runs Hartsfield-Jackson, and Mayor Shirley Franklin and airport chief Ben DeCosta. Citing the new state law, it challenges the city's ability to maintain a gun-free zone at the airport.

Should licensed gun owners be allowed to bear firearms in non-secure areas of the airport?
The City of Atlanta (and the AJC - just on general principles) need a hard slap down...
That's right down the highway.
He wants to go the legal/legislative route, he should introduce a new bill criminalizing the act of city officials who ignore the state law. Make it a felony with a 5 year jail term. Maybe that will be enough of a cluebat to get through these libdolts’ heads. If not, prosecute.
Lord, how long will we have the die-hard gun grabbers among us? Even with a pronouncement from on high, the idiots still don't get it.
To all who are unsure about what the Second Amendment is about, read it this way:
The Second amendment has NO EXCEPTIONS! Live with it.
Benjamin R. DeCosta assumed the leadership of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as aviation general manager for the City of Atlanta - Department of Aviation in June 1998...
A native New Yorker, Ben DeCosta received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physics at Queens College in 1968 before earning his Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 1975. In 1984, he participated in a program for senior executives in state and local government at the Kennedy School of Public Administration at Harvard University.
Well, it seems Mr. DeCosta thinks himself qualified to legislate from the terminal bench.
Nope.....sorry....that's not what the SCOTUS said and I,along with many other conservatives, want there to be some restrictions.I,like most FReepers, welcomed the recent 2nd Amendment decision with great joy.Law abiding, mentally balanced adults in this country should be able to have guns,in their homes and other places, for the purpose of self defense.
But in my not-at-all humble opinion there are at least *some* places where such citizens should not be allowed to have a gun and I think that the airport just might be such a place.
(Go ahead...lay into me."Communist"...."liberal"...."sissy".....)
Discretion is the better part of valor here, IMHO, but why do I sense an atmosphere that reminds me of the Intolerable Acts and the Dred Scott decision. These are interesting times.

No 34.37% 1492
P.S. My previous statement was supposed to be a rhetorical question.
Why? What's your rationale for banning guns in the non-secure areas of an airport, like the ticketing lobby, baggage claim, parking ramps, etc.?
I fear you will be in the minority holding such an opinion during times of extreme redress should the people ever find it necessary to chase the traitors through the airports when the perps are trying to escape the wrath of justice.
I am confused here. If it is a concealed weapon, and you never go through a security check (i.e., metal detector), how would they ever know if you are carrying or not?
What restrictions do you think should be placed on the Second Amendment?
***If it is a concealed weapon, and you never go through a security check (i.e., metal detector), how would they ever know if you are carrying or not?***
That’s exactly it, and why it’s called concealed carry: they shouldn’t know.
You better start writing your legislature, then, since you're in one of the 44 other states that allow carry at public transportation terminals (which would include the unsecured side of airports). I'm sure you can point to all the shootings that have occurred in airport lobbies committed by carry permit holders to bolster your case.
I hope you'll admit that these days we're far more likely to be chasing followers of the Religion of Pieces through airports rather than "traitors" (after all,how fast can Kucinich run?).
1)Adults only
2)No convictions for certain types/levels/categories of crime.
3)No diagnosis of certain types of serious mental illness (e.g.,schizophrenia)....particularly illnesses that are chronic in nature.
And maybe restrictions regarding certain locations.Schools come to mind....maybe hospitals...maybe airports.....
