Estupido: Juan Hernandez gives dumb advice; McCain takes it

Whose idea was it to send John McCain down to Mexico the day before Independence Day and have him grovel for Latino votes south of the border by visiting the Basilica de Guadalupe–a famed Catholic shrine featuring the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which most Mexican politicians consider off-limits for campaigning?

According to Frentes Politicos (hat tip - reader Edgar M.), the stunt was the brainchild of none other than McCain’s open-borders Hispanic outreach director and former Mexican cabinet official Juan Hernandez, who apparently survived the big campaign staff shake-up:

I. El truco para la buena imagen fue idea de Juan Hernández —el director de la Oficina Presidencial para Mexicanos en el Exterior de Vicente Fox—, quien hoy asesora en asuntos de hispanos al candidato presidencial republicano de EU, John McCain. Dentro del equipo de campaña refieren que el consejero supo referir cuán afortunada en simpatía mexicana resulta una visita a la Basílica de Guadalupe, dada la centenaria cultura popular de equiparar “estadunidense” con “protestante”.

Rough translation via Babelfish (if you’ve got a better one, let me know):

I. The trick for the good image was [the] idea of Juan Hernandez - the Mexican director of the Presidential Office [of Mexicans Living Outside Mexico for] Vicente Fox, who today advises in subjects Hispanic to the Republican presidential candidate of the [Estados Unidos/United States], John McCain. Within the field equipment they refer that the advisor knew to refer how lucky in Mexican affection is a visit to the Basilica from Guadalupe, given the centennial popular culture to compare “estadunidense” with “protestant”. Hernandez, of course, served under former Mexican president Vicente Fox–who, what a coinky-dink, also wrapped himself in the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe while campaigning.

Here’s McCain with the Virgin of Guadalupe looming over him during a Mexican TV interview:

Could Hernandez and friends be more heavy-handed?

McCain’s visit last week confounded Mexicans, irked grass-roots American conservatives, and failed to mollify the un-mollify-able shamnesty forces on either side of the border. All for one cheap, pandering photo-op.

If Obama had pulled something this crass and stupid on the eve of Independence Day weekend, Republicans would be having a field day today.

Instead, you’ll hear…nada.

Next pander-stops:

McCain and Obama speak to the League of United Latin American Citizens’ national convention on Tuesday in Washington and the National Council of La Raza/The Race on Saturday in San Diego.

As I mentioned last week, San Diego votes on a La Raza/The Race Day declaration on Tuesday.

McCain is running the worst campaing since Giuliani's "Flordia" strategy - and he's hired the guy who cooked that one up as his new campaign director.

This Juan Hernandez is a grade A creep, and a US-hating SOB. I'm so glad that the McLame campaign has another winner giving advice.

Ah, our little diva Michelle on the warpath again. She’s so cute when she’s acting all outraged. When was the last time Michelle Malkin generated an original idea that advanced the conservative movement at all?

Maybe you can ask McCain the same question. Malkin will come out ahead every time.

Exposing McCain's treasonous tendencies does advance the conservative movement.

Nah, just because you say it doesn't make it so. McCain is wrong on some things, but his advocacy for dumping Rumsfeld and implementing the surge seem to be a big turning point in the WOT.

Whether TweedleDee or TweedleDum is elected, we’re going to get open borders and mass amnesty for 20 million illegal alien invaders.

We’re screwed.

I think Malkin is one of the best conservative bloggers and journalists out there. And she's been after Hernandez for some time now - long before anyone else investigated his background and his connections to the McCain campaign.

Well, I’m a Malkin fan. The only puzzling thing about all this is that McCain visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As she points out, that won’t please the left OR the Mexican revolutionaries and drug dealers who pretty much run the country. Maybe it was Jeb Bush’s idea.

In any case, McCain is in bad odor with the religious right, Catholics AND Evangelicals, for pulling his vicious Bob Jones University ploy in partnership with the New York Times back in 2000. He badly needs to mend fences. But visiting a Mexican shrine probably wasn’t the smartest way to go about it.

Perhaps. I suspect there has been a rather large drop in the number of illegals in the last year. Not sure how much harder it is to cross the border, but hopefully no one is making it over the fence. More ICE agents, more border patrol and more local law enforcement efforts could drive the illegals out of their own accord.

“catering to the extremists, mal-contents, and kooks”

I take it that you put 70 percent of the US population in that category.

Look in the mirror to see an “extremist” on the amnesty issue.
