NW Airlines? No surprise. They’re the home built, primer coated, grease monkey jalopies of the air.

There are no stringers backing up the nose cone of an airplane . Could be plain fatigue failure due to air pressure, given maybe an initial crack there.... Or maybe they hit a bird.

Hail usually makes hundreds of smaller dents - all along the leading edges of the tail, stabilizer, wings, engine inlets, etc.

Birds do that exact kind of damage, but most of the bird-brain impact damages occur either in Washington, or the bird’s body is still stuck in radar dome.

where thunderstorm cells can reach in excess of 60,000’ altitude.

I remember flying from Sydney to Hono, and over the middle of the Pacific seeing massive thunderheads, as if we were on the ground.

Really impressed me, since the 747 was probably at 37,000...

It looks almost like the cone was sucked in by a pressure differential.

If you slice a hailstone at the equator it looks like a tree ring slice.
