Escondido tries to rid itself of undocumented immigrants

Escondido city officials refuse to give up.

Two years ago, the city passed an ordinance to punish landlords for renting to illegal immigrants. But it rescinded the rental restriction after a legal challenge was filed and bills began to mount.

Now Escondido is trying a new approach to what it calls the "public nuisances" of illegal immigration, citing residents for code violations such as garage conversions, graffiti and junk cars.

The city is also debating a new ordinance that would restrict overnight street parking without a permit. In addition, it is drafting a policy that would prohibit drivers from picking up day laborers along some streets.

"We learned from the rental ordinance," Councilman Sam Abed said. "We changed our focus to quality of life issues."

Like many city leaders frustrated with the federal government, Escondido officials said they were taking immigration enforcement into their own hands. They said they were fighting the perception that Escondido, a city in affluent northern San Diego County with a burgeoning Latino population, has become a destination for illegal immigrants.

Councilman Ed Gallo said he regularly receives complaints from Escondido residents about illegal immigrants crowding schools, hospitals and neighborhoods.

"If you are not here legally, you don't belong here," Gallo said. "We're talking about image and appearance. . . . We are trying to change the image of Escondido."

The city's police department is also playing a role.

Police Chief Jim Maher said his department conducted two "criminal alien" sweeps this year. Officers identified illegal immigrants with criminal records who had been deported but then returned. In two separate sweeps, Escondido police arrested 31 illegal immigrants and turned them over to federal authorities for possible deportation.

From the article:

“Tomas Moreno, who has lived in Escondido illegally for 20 years, said he listens to Spanish-language radio stations to find out whether and where any license checkpoints have been set up.”

What the ...?!

Fox had an interesting spot on today about how there are lots of illegals returning to Mexico. They had on one woman who’d been here fourteen years (couldn’t speak English, of course) and whose three children were born here, but she and her husband were illegals and were returning to Mexico because (a) there are no day laborer jobs anymore; (b) the cost of living is increasing; and (c) the anti-illegal sentiment is frightening them. Tough.

Wow talk about 20 years too late. I got out of Escondido back in 1989 and even back then it was a mess with Illegals. Common was the car running alonside you at night with someone hopping out with a weapon shouting Dinero ! you couldn`t even get robbed in English there. I really hope they get it cleaned up withing the next couple of years so I can go serve in the wonderful Temple being built there.

The Federal Government = FAIL!

It's funny to see Obama and McCain fighting to be in charge of it.

That’s what the illegals on the Fox segment were claiming. I report; you decide.

Obviously the cops need to monitor those radio stations and mobilize their checkpoints - move them around during the day and night.

And they better make sure there are no moles inside the police department.

Oh, boo-hoo to that woman!

The truth is the Mexican economy is ripping along at a 14-13% annual growth rate. They’re going home because the value of the dollar has dropped, jobs south of the border are plentiful, times are better at home and all without being hassled by our Federales.

Who is the Congressperson for that district? What the hell are THEY doing? What is their voting record on immigration? If not in support of the people of Escondido, one of these councilmembers should against that Congressperson and kick them out— if they are not doing their job.

I hear ya! My in-laws used to live in Escondido about 20 years ago. My FIL liked to drive these humongous Buicks that you could probably fit 10 illegals in the trunk if you were so inclined. He was always getting pulled over by the highway patrol.
