Speed Trap And Red Light Camera Locations Have Nowhere To Hide
GPS Daily ^ | Jul 24, 2008 | Staff Writers

Njection.com has added several new features allowing visitors to view where Red Light Cameras, Speed Detection Cameras and Speed Traps are located anywhere in the world. Njection.com uses Microsoft Virtual Earth Map Controls to display the location of Speed Traps and Red Light Cameras worldwide.

Users with an Internet connection can view, contribute and rate where these speed traps are located. In addition, a heat map can be displayed showing what time of day those areas are monitored and will display them visually on the map when those areas are monitored. The map displays a color-coded system for better readability.

You can download them to your mobile GPS system to alert you to approaching monitored areas.

It would be great if they could add to this list of services, checkpoints.

"Speed detection cameras are banned by law in Texas."

It will be interesting to see how it plays out in Louisiana. They recently installed both the cameras and the photo speed vans here in Lafayette. Because they are not law enforcement, but a private company operating under contract with the city/parish, a complaint has been lodged with the State Private Investigator Licensing Board that they are in fact performing PI services without a license, and the board is seeking an injunction. Additionally, the company, based in AZ has hired local people to process the photos and tickets. It has been discovered that some of the locals submitted hiring paperwork to the corporate office in AZ which was signed by a notary in AZ affirming that the LA citizen "appeared before them" in person, i.e., the AZ notary falsified the paperwork of the people processing the tickets.

Like I said, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Its not about safety. Its all about revenue. And every local jurisdiction needs drivers to be a cash cow.

Just don't trust everything on the map.

There is at least one point there that says it's in Overland Park but it's on the Missouri side of the state line.

As they should be, along with red light cameras. They are nothing but revenue agents, and have NOTHING to do with safety. Heck, half the traffic lights in the country ought to be removed anyway. Many do nothing but hinder the flow of traffic and waste energy and time.

I clicked on a location in S. Minneapolis and got a blurb about a spot in Stillwater. I can see cops going into this and just typing nonsense to drowned out the true info.

It will eventually come, even though there are a few “speed bumps” along the way. There was a recent article in the ITE (International Traffic Engineers) journal. Here are some quotes:

Tital: “Issues Related to Red-Light Camera Enforcement Systems”

“Red-light running is the leading cause of high speed, right-angle collisions at intersections.”

“Red-light camera enforcement systems have been deployed in communities, but the jury is still out about the acceptability; the policials and legal issues concerning successful implementation; and the public education and awareness about potential benefits.”

“There is apparent resistance from the public to the wide implementation of camera enforcement systems because of concerns about privacy and other political issues. This feature discusses the red-light camera system, how it works, and issues related to its application.”

“Srinivasan present a critical review of studies that have evaluated automated enforcement systems (red-light cameras)......he focused on seven key studies. .....The major findings of his presentation were that right-angle crashes decrease and rear-end crashes increase with the use of these cameras.” Note that T-bone crashes are more likely to cause injury or death than rear-end crashes. T-bone crashes generally cost more in medical costs and repair costs than rear-end crashes (from other studies).

“He concluded that yellow timing and clearance interval calculations must be taken seriously and done accurately.”

“The study showed that the system achieved effectiveness in some locations, but had nearly no effect in other locations.”

“Such a study could classify the intersections and situations where red-light cameras are effective, leading to better implementation of the system. ....the public should be educated about how the system works before it is implemented.”

It is too late to stop this now. They are working on the public relations details and tuning the message. The time to stop something is when it is still in the bud. Right now, that is “congestion pricing”. Congestion pricing is a tax placed on car users that will NOT be plowed back into road building or other things that ease the problem. It is extra money for the politicians to spend as they see fit. Now is the time to oppose congestion pricing whenever and wherever it is brought up.

Many of them here in CA are 'causing' accidents, not preventing them. The locals who know where they are brake while the lights are still green to avoid being trapped, causing many rear-end collisions. It's all about money to keep public employee union salaries high and fund pensions.

If this site becomes popular some enterprising individuals will decide that one way to slow speeders down without the need for cameras will be to post fraudulent locations as containing them.

In a lot of areas crooked governments have made it so the lights where red camera lights are are shorter than normal lights so as to catch people. This has actually led to more accidents as drivers either slam on brakes or accelerate hard to avoid the shortened yellow light.

the preferred method in England is “necklacing” the camera with a burning tire.

No speed traps in the largest city near me, but red light cams oh yes..

Easy to find them on the map.

They were banned in FL until they found a way around the law. Now they treat them like parking tickets which have no effect on license or insurance. They just raise revenue.

Red light cameras aren't though. Just give them time, when they need more money, they'll allow speed cameras too.

Why would cops do that? It's not in their interest to have non-cop revenue enhancement technicians. Fewer cops would be needed.

Now the companies that do speed and red light cameras on the other hand...
