DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) - General Motors will begin building Saab vehicles in the United States rather than put its Swedish subsidiary up for sale, GM chairman and chief executive Rick Wagoner said Friday.

< >

"The issue at Saab is trying to sell too many Saabs in the US as the Swedish (kroner) has strengthened against the dollar. We can't push volume in the US. We have to let it settle out and reflect the currency.

"But we've got a number of new (Saab) products coming up beginning in the third quarter next year and it will have a new product portfolio for the first time in a long time."

Saabs aren’t Saabs anymore really. Sure they keep things like having the key between the seats but they aren’t the distinctive contrarian cars they used to be. Now they are more like any other car. GM entered the picture in 1990 and by 1993 the 900 used the Opel Vectra as a basis for the car. The 9-2 is a rebadged Subaru and the 9-7 is a disguised Chevy Blazer.

On the flip side, many of the bits in Cadillacs are Saab parts.

Saabs aren’t Saabs anymore really.

And building them here will kill the cachet.

I thought curiosity killed the cachet. Must be more than one of them.

Very good. I’d say LOL but that just doesn’t work for me.

I still wonder why GM hasn’t admitted that they’ve messed up and sell the marque to someone who can actually do something with it?

From the article: "Saab is a critical part of our European product portfolio and frankly, it does quite well in Europe and tends to be quite a good money maker for us,"

I don't think GM can do that.
