WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush early Wednesday signed into law the government's most aggressive effort to combat the country's housing crisis, ending months of sometimes bitter fighting over the best way to curb foreclosures and calm financial markets.

The White House announced in a statement that Mr. Bush has signed the sweeping housing package, making it law with none of the pomp customary for significant legislation. Spokesman Tony Fratto said the bill was signed in the Oval Office at 7 a.m. EDT as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and five of the administration's top economic officials looked on.

Why should he care? He'll be long gone when the bill comes due.

“signed the sweeping housing package, making it law with none of the pomp customary for significant legislation.”

Nis name is still on it, as are all the rinos that voted for it.

There we have it, the free market at work from this great free trade/free market president.

How many free traders in Congress voted for this? Let the free market work, they always say.

Ok, I have not seen or read the details of this bill. What exactly does it do? I am trying to be fair, but something tells me that once learning all the details I am going to be overwhelmed by the stink.

“What free market?”

The free market that all too many Republican presidents and members of Congress have pretended there existed here, there and everywhere. And they’ve based far too many policy on their pretend free markets over the years.

Why do we even still pretend that this is a free market economy?

We criticize and ridicule the socialist economies of Europe yet we are not much better.

All hail socialism!!!!

It won't do either!

The same people will default because they do not have the money.

The only difference is that now my children and grandchildren will have to pay for someone else's idiocy.

Good Grief!

It’s open ended. He doesn’t even care how much it will be, let alone how to pay for it.

Again our government has no concern for the honest individual and in turn decides to help the criminals and the deceptive borrowers.

Even so how is a person who owes $500K on a $300K house going to get a loan or refinance it? This money is all going to disappear, and no one will benefit except the criminals in DC. I guess we are getting the government ready for Obama's reign of socialism.

The market is only “free” until the taxpayers have to bail it out

I find, that, those who talk free trade/free market are the ones who have no real understanding of such....and are the quickest to call on taxpayers to bail it out

Others, I believe, answered your question, but consider that Bush refused to sign it in public and instead did it behind closed doors. That speaks volumes about it.

I don't know what it is going to do, but Rush said in reading through it, it will not bail out near as many people who thought it would.

“That speaks volumes about it.”

Reminds me of his cowardice when he signed the McCain’s CFR bill. What a disgrace both of them are.
