In recent presidential history, Republicans have swamped Democrats among voters who regularly attend worship services - and in the last two nail-biters they provided more than the margin of victory.
But a new poll out is the latest to suggest that this November will not be a repeat.
The Barna Group, which tracks faith groups, said Democrat Barack Obama is leading Republican John McCain 43 percent to 34 percent.
Obama's campaign Tuesday highlighted the findings that, of the 19 faith groups tracked in the poll, McCain is only leading among evangelicals. Still, like other national polls, it shows the race appears to be tightening. Obama led 50 percent to 35 percent in the same poll in early June.
McCain has long been viewed with some suspicion by the Christian right, and he has not solidified support among those leaders and voters. He badly needs to do so to win in November.

This is good news...that means the support is soft and once they learn about Obama’s ultra liberal stands they’ll go for McCain.
Leaves it up to conservatives to get the word out on Obama.

I attend Mass every Sunday, Novena and scripture study on Tuesday. This religious minded voter would not think of voting for Obama, the one who would let babies surviving abortions died from neglect.

In other words, if this poll has any validity at all, evangelicals see through Obama's charade better than any other religious group.

About the ResearchThis report is based upon telephone interviews conducted by The Barna Group with a random sample of 1003 adults selected from across the continental United States, age 18 and older, in August 2008. The maximum margin of sampling error associated with the aggregate sample is ±3.2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Minimal statistical weighting was used to calibrate the aggregate sample to known population percentages in relation to several key demographic variables.
"Born again Christians" are defined as people who said they have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today and who also indicated they believe that when they die they will go to Heaven because they had confessed their sins and had accepted Jesus Christ as their savior. Respondents are not asked to describe themselves as "born again."
"Evangelicals" meet the born again criteria (described above) plus seven other conditions. Those include saying their faith is very important in their life today; believing they have a personal responsibility to share their religious beliefs about Christ with non-Christians; believing that Satan exists; believing that eternal salvation is possible only through grace, not works; believing that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; asserting that the Bible is accurate in all that it teaches; and describing God as the all-knowing, all-powerful, perfect deity who created the universe and still rules it today. Being classified as an evangelical is not dependent upon church attendance or the denominational affiliation of the church attended. Respondents were not asked to describe themselves as "evangelical."
Non-evangelical born again Christians meet the born again criteria described above, but not the evangelical criteria.
Notional Christians are those who consider themselves to be Christian but do not meet the born again criteria.
So, Barna was able to break down 19 faith groups by 1003 people? I would think the margin of error would be much higher than he claims. He clearly is way to impressed with his own analysis.
They can say they "believe" in God and call themselves religous minded.
Why do I doubt this?
