Is McCain Open To Reenacting The Draft?
The Carpetbagger Report ^ | 8/20/08

Posted on 08/21/2008 8:20:44 PM PDT by steve-b

At a town-hall event in New Mexico today, John McCain was asked about veterans' care, but the questioner added a provocative point at the end of her question. Take a look:

(YouTube link)

For those of you who can't watch clips online, a woman in the audience told the presumptive Republican nominee, "Senator McCain I truly hope you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question though. Disabled veterans, especially in this state, have horrible conditions... I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical and our vets can't even get to a doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t reenact the draft I don't think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell."

McCain, without hesitation, responded, "Ma'am, let me say that I don't disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for your support of all of our veterans."

Now, it’s likely McCain was just being polite. But the woman who spoke at the event insisted we have to "reenact the draft," and McCain said he didn't disagree with anything she said.

And that is bound to cause some headaches for the McCain campaign....

I don't think he really understands how much damage he can do with one boneheaded statement -- the $5,000,000 joke, the "I don't know how many houses I own" bit, and now this.

No thanks to open borders tools like Juan.

IMHO, the woman was a plant...unless McCain really is this bone-headed and actually supports bringing back the draft.

I’d bet he basically meant he agreed about everything BUT that part and in fact should make a brief statement clarifying this.

Really, Dubya can, and should, end this bit of political theater once and for all — one stroke of his pen to reverse that particular bit of Peanut Head idiocy, and the Dems lose one of their bogeymen.

I don't know how many houses I own

If I knew the right answer was zero , why didn't he ?

My first thoughts were that he did not want to touch "sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical [care]."

Take California.. please! It is probably the worst state for medical care owing in large part to ILLEGAL alien demands upon medical care.

Why is she a plant. She didn’t put words in his mouth. He needs Lieberman to keep by his side more often to correct his flubs.

That's a real freakin' disconnect of a setup. Our care for veterans sucks, people won't volunteer for a outfit with sucky care.

Answer: "I agree"

And so, who are the boneheads who conclude that McCain supports continuing sucky care and instituting a draft?

You are reading too much into it. McCain knows the problem with draftees. For the most part, they don’t want to be there and won’t care that they get NJT (non-judicial punishment) for smoking dope or not showing up for watch or being screw offs. They can be given only the most menial jobs without constant supervision and you certainly wouldn’t want them fixing your airplane or in your rifle squad.

I think you are desperately reaching for something to criticize McCain on. If you had actually listen to the comments at the Saddle Back Forum instead of knee jerk reacted you would realize how utterly absurd your comments are.

Guaranteed, if anyone goes down this road, it will end up being “universal national service” where EVERYONE is obligated to spend two years. But it won’t be in the military. It will be as organizers, social workers, voter registrars amount the oppressed, clerks for the ACLU, and more that you don’t want to know.

Those who don’t like it will have two years of sensitivity training and reeducation.

Right! McCain needs a handler. Too bad Cindy isn’t more politically sophisticated so she could keep him on message.

How many times does he have to say no to the draft??

He’s already VERY recently said no - I am talking about days ago.

McCain cannot be responsible for every breath a person takes at a townhall. Being blandly polite does not equate to dogmatic agreement on the fine print points of every Tom Dick and Mary who comes along to jab their jaw at a townhall.

ENOUGH. This is just another excuse by our “responisble” media to create a story. It’s total BS.

What’s wrong with bringing back the draft? I think it would be great to have all the guys who want to attack everyone be drafted.

No he cannot. Congress implemented the Selective Service Registration. Carter did not and an EO cannot undo an act of Congress

But the woman who spoke at the event insisted we have to "reenact the draft," and McCain said he didn't disagree with anything she said.

BULLSTALIN:

S.89 Title: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Sen Hollings, Ernest F. [SC] (introduced 1/7/2003)

Latest Major Action: 1/7/2003 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Armed Services.

H.R.163 Title: To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

Sponsor: Rep Rangel, Charles B. [NY-15] (introduced 1/7/2003) Cosponsors (14 all Democrat) Related Bills: S.89

Latest Major Action: 10/5/2004 Failed of passage/not agreed to in House. Status: On motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill Failed by the Yeas and Nays: (2/3 required): 2 - 402 (Roll no. 494).

Another typical DNC talking point.
