The race between President Bush and Sen. John Kerry is as close as it has ever been, even after the Democratic National Convention last week, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Sunday.

Kerry is far out in front of Bush on the question of who would unite the country. Fifty-two percent of all those interviewed said Kerry would, while only 39 percent said Bush would.

I am beginning to think the Dems are no longer getting a bounce from their conventions because it is just a repeat of the major news outlets. It has turned into essentially a re-run of the nightly news. When the people then turn their attention to the GOP convention they hear the message unfiltered straight from the candidates - without interpretation or soundbites from Katie Couric or the AP - and shift their support to the GOP canddidates.

The Bush campaign was building up a lot of momentum after the conventions, and I believe they were headed for a comfortable victory. Then the race tightened back up after Bush stumbled through the last half of the first debate.

What everyone here seems to forget is that the popularity polls mean very little.

Looking at the Electoral College averages nation wide, Obama still leads very comfortably. In fact, has gained strength. The youth-vote factor is also not being considered
here as well. They came out of nowhere in the primaries and gave the Democrats Obama when Hillary was their “sure thing”. It took the DNC completely by surprise. Even they were fully geared up for the Hillary juggernaut.

It’s still early and the MSM has not yet begun to spin the election. This historically happens in the middle of October when the brain dead public just start beginning to learn the names of the candidates. Well, at least one or two that is.

I think you’re right, no-one’s accounting for Obama’s ground game in the polls (registering voters, etc.)
