Carter: Oil Industry Will Hold Down Prices to Help Republicans Former President Jimmy Carter tells 'Early Show' crude costs will remain low to benefit GOP in 2008 election.

By Paul Detrick Business & Media Institute 8/27/2008 4:57:00 PM

Former president Jimmy Carter predicted on August 27 that “oil companies will hold down oil prices a little bit, you know, to try to help the Republican ticket.”

Carter, who was talking to co-host Harry Smith on “The Early Show” that morning, also said that the economy would be the most important issue, “as it was when Bill Clinton was elected the first time.”

The former president also said it was “surprising and gratifying” when presumptive Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Ill., carried Georgia in the primary “over two attractive white candidates: Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.”

Greg Hunter, a CNN correspondent for “Your $$$$$,”made the same prediction during a June 16 broadcast. “[T]hey're going to drive that price down, they're going to pop the dollar up, they’re going to drive the price down, they're going to work this, say, for the election,” Hunter said.

High oil prices would be a much greater help to Republicans for the election.

Jimmy Carter is a l-o-s-e-r on soooo many levels.

The really remarkable thing is that he is absolutely oblivious to that fact.

I was thinking that to favor republicans, we really need to tank the economy a bit more and then point out dem policies that directly effect the poor state of things. If oil/gas comes down, the drive to drill is going to subside and dems will take credit for it.

Former president Jimmy Carter predicted on August 27 that “oil companies will hold down oil prices a little bit, you know, to try to help the Republican ticket.”

Don't the "Big Oil" companies only control about 5% of the world's supply of oil coming out of the ground? They have no control over Russia, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Mexico, Nigeria or dozens of other countries. There's not much Big Oil can do to affect the prices other than maybe refining it for a penny less than usual.

The former president also said it was “surprising and gratifying” when presumptive Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Ill., carried Georgia in the primary “over two attractive white candidates: Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.”

So, when did Jimmy's eyesight fail completely. He gets around pretty well for a blind man.

The oil industry consists of a whole lot of players who aren't American citizens. We've got international corporations and governments involved. I thought the rest of the world hated us, hated Bush?

Ugh, I get a headache trying to make sense of what idiots say.

Jimmy Peanut ought to be thankful the crude prices are going lower because it helps the Democrats. What a stupid idiot!

As much as I hate the high price of gas, it has been a galvanizing force against the Bolshecrats. As usual, Carter has it wrong.

I would think that higher prices would help the Repubs. It demonstrates how the dems have pu us into this situation by catering to the environuts and how prices have increased since they have taken over congress.

And an even worster former President since before time began.

Higher oil prices would help the Republicans. They are the ones who are saying “drill now, drill here.”
