Although Americans are used to Labor Day campaign kickoffs, this years back-to-back political conventions meant exposure to more than the usual number of partisan promises of a bright future and excoriation of the opposition.
So, while most of us who address the national conventions like to think our words will make all the difference for our party and the great American who is our nominee, in reality our speeches usually just blend into a kaleidoscope of impressions the public takes from the weeks events.
That is why, in my own convention speech, I tried to tap into a sentiment already established in the public mind. I talked about John McCains remarkable and heroic record as a POW. But I also talked about the John McCain that I got to know while sitting in the desk next to his on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

If only either Duncan Hunter, Sr., Tom Tancredo, or Fred Thompson, all solid conservatives, were the final choice for ‘08 POTUS on the GOP side instead of “maverick” John McCain! I’m also curious as to if either Duncan Hunter, Sr., Tom Tancredo, or Fred Thompson would of seriously picked Sarah Palin to be their VP (not that it really matters now)?
The conservative backstabbing by John McCain truly lasted longer than ten years.
I’ll stifle the usual gale of laughter that accompanies a Fred Thompson post and just say this...
he gave a fabulous speech in praise of McCain and I will credit him with acknowledging his better.
Good to have him on the winning team.
These are truly strong Conservatives, but this year with Repos being "on the run," the media would have crucified them all, and Obama would get elected. With McCain's maverick status (like Lieberman) he has the appeal to draw in more of the middle ground voters. Palin's bombshell surprise candidacy has knocked the media on their asses. This is probably the only ticket that really stands a chance of beating the world's choice for America's President.
Whatever, this is what we have - 2 choices - McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden.
That’s it.
One really scary in charge of our country - the other has been very independent, often against us for years. However, maybe that independence will mean as President - no one will tell him what to do and he will take care of the country.
And we have been given Sarah. All of us seem to sense that Sarah is not your usual politician and that is amazing if you think about it. Politicians campaign, tell us what they think, conjole us, explain, explain, campaign, campaign.
But, in one night, one is picked and makes a speech and a sense of excitement sweeps across the country. What is it we see so that excitement immediately sweeps the country?
To ignore this and even think of voting against a McCain - is ridiculous for one even half-heartedly a conservative.
So, it does not matter that McCain has flaws - we have only him. But, he did give us Sarah and maybe the man does intend to take care of all of us.
But true conservatives take care of themselves, and they don’t wait for anybody in the government to take care of them!
